In 1964 – Nike, then known as Blue Ribbon Sports, is founded in Eugene, Oregon. Originally a distributor of Onitsuka Tiger brand shoes, the company grossed $8,000 (about $65,000 in today’s money) that first year and began producing their own shoes in 1971, when Blue Ribbon Sports became Nike – named after the Greed goddess of victory. Nike had gross revenues of $36.3 billion in 2018 and became a member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 2013.
In 1981 – The Oakland Raiders become the first wild-card team to win the Super Bowl, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 in Super Bowl XV at the Superdome in New Orleans. The Raiders got three touchdown passes from Jim Plunkett and three interceptions from Rod Martin, a Super Bowl record that still stands. It was the second of three Super Bowl titles for the Raiders, who earlier this week officially become the Las Vegas Raiders. To date, six wild card teams have won the Super Bowl, the last being the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl VLV.
In 1942 – Glenn Miller is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Selling Singles chart – one of several predecessors to the Hot 100 – for the eighth of nine non-consecutive weeks with Chattanooga Choo Choo. The song had first hit #1 on Nov 29, was replaced on Dec 20 for a week by Miller’s Elmer’s Tune and Miller’s A String of Pearls would replace Chattanooga Choo Choo at #1 on Feb 7, making Miller the second act to replace himself at #1 twice. The feat was first done by Jimmy Dorsey the year before and would later duplicated by the Beatles on the Hot 100 in 1964.
