In 1832 – John C Calhoun of South Carolina, a leading proponent of slavery, resigns as vice president of the United States, the first vice president to do so. Calhoun was first elected in 1824 with John Quincy Adams and re-elected in 1828 with Andrew Jackson and had only three months remaining in his term and resigned so he could take one of South Carolina’s seats in the United States Senate. During his term, Calhoun cast 31 tie-breaking votes as president of the United States Senate, a record that still stands.
In 1958 – The Baltimore Colts defeat the New York Giants 23-17 in overtime the NFL championship game at Yankee Stadium. It was the first overtime game in NFL history, ending when Colts running back Alan Ameche scored on a one-yard run and the game is sometimes called the Greatest Game Ever Played. Each member of the Colts received a winning share of $4,718, about $41,500 in today’s dollars. By contrast, the members of the Philadelphia Eagles received $112,000 for winning Super Bowl LII.
In 1974 – Helen Reddy is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with Angie Baby. The song would spend one week at #1 and was written by Alan O’Day, who said it took three months to write and included input from his therapist. It was Reddy’s third and final #1 on the Hot 100, following 1973’s Delta Dawn and 1972’s I Am Woman. Her last Top 40 hit was in 1977.
