The Diary of a Nobody/October 5

Today’s entry is on the house. Enjoy.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, October 5
Brandon was working the front desk when I arrived…Usually, it’s Amy, but Brandon said she’s sick, tho he didn’t disclose the ailment, tho he did indicate she might be out for a little while, noting the schedule had to be adjusted, tho ol’ Sparrow couldn’t be bothered to

Getting sick is a pain in the neck now, up here at least, because you need a virus test to return so who knows when Amy will be back.

I’ll tell you what, I am not going to miss setting breakfast up…It was actually late today, which pierces me to the quick because even tho I’m not some mother hen who fusses over his guests, I do enjoy being of service to others, good because Lord knows I’ve spent enuff of my working life doing it…What happened was a guest came to the front desk at 0620, right as I was heading out to get the cart out of the storage room…He and co-worker had shared a room the past four nights and he wanted to put half the bill on his company card.

The solution to this is plain to even a dolt: go into billing and create another window, transfer two night’s charges to the second window, bill the second window and then refund the extra amount left on the first window.

But did ol’ Sparrow think of that???…At least right off???…Nooooooooooo, he did not…My first thought was to bill the folio the amount and then refund the balance to the original card and while this might have worked for the payment, it might also have deleted the original card and then there wouldn’t be a card to issue the refund, too…I farted around with a couple of other time-wasters before finally hitting on the solution…This took several minutes and breakfast was late…In fact, it wasn’t completely out until 0645 or so because I couldn’t find the goddamned fruit tray we’ve been using.

I actually ate some vegetables at the hotel this morning…Yesterday I had bought some green peppers, carrots, celery and some yucky broccoli because I’ve been waking up to go the can more than I should and I read where veggies can help here…Around 0400 I had some of everything, plus my daily kombucha, and it was pretty filling and I had no desire t stop at the fast-food joint – which I am, of course, avoiding except for Saturdays – on the way to the Veterans Service Office (VSO).

It was pretty slow at the VSO…There was a call from a nurse at the VA teleclinic in the next country…Regular readers of this crap may – or they may not – recall that Mr W called last week needing transportation there Wednesday for an appointment…Well, the nurse called and said Mr W told her he had transportation arranged however the clinic doesn’t have Mr W scheduled for an appointment on Wednesday…He does have one for October 16 that I am also driving him to, but not for this Wednesday…I asked if the appointment could be somewhere else and the nurse said she had thought of that, too, and would look into it.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1400 Monday until 2130 Monday…7.5 hours for the day and 17.0 hours for the week…Proof that yours truly will whine about anything – as if further proof is required – can be found in the fact that I am whining about sleeping too much…Regular readers of this crap know that the next sleep period begins Tuesday morning – referred to here as the Tuesday Sleep Session (TSS) – and too much Monday sleep could affect Tuesday’s rest…But in the odd hours racket, it is generally considered good policy to get what sleep you can when you can get it.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
