The Diary of a Nobody/February 10

Sure, Read Free Sunday (RFS) is a go today.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, February 10
The big news at the hotel is the Assistant Front Desk Manager (AFDM) is an uncle now…We are not making that up…The FDS had the news when we reported for duty…We strongly suspect he had told us a while ago that a kid related to him would be dropping sometime, but the AFDM doesn’t talk about his sister too much, so we’re not sure…Mom and the kid are doing good, and the kid weighed in at 9.5 pounds, which sounds healthy enuff to us and he added his dad had a good line, noting that the kid had all fingers and toes, and that’s a pretty good start to life.

Yours truly had a pretty good line early on…A guy came by looking for some towels, noting that his room didn’t have any bath towels…We asked his room number and he said 143 and he seemed like a friendly sort and we pursed our lips, nodded solemnly, and noted that was one of our famous “no towel” rooms, an amenity he paid extra for…This got a snort out of the AFDM and the guest took it with good humor, too, tho his pleasure was kept within seemly bounds…He noted there were hand towels and wash rags in there and we wanted to ask what he could possibly want with four bath towels, but when you’ve been working the Front Desk Humor Racket (FDHR) as long as we have, you know when it’s appropriate to push it and when it’s best to call it a day so – call it the instincts all the great ones have, if you must – we kept that line to ourselves.

The AFDM reported we were sold out tonite, with the Sold Out Bonus (SOB) coming to about $75, not too bad…He noted we were sold out for two of the next three nites, too, and we were only three away from a sellout on the other, so it could be SOBs every nite this week for ol’ Sparrow.

The AFDM also advised that yours truly had a $10 bonus coming because a guest had mentioned me in an online review…This has been a thing for a while under the new owners, but it’s the first we’ve been told we’ve been specifically mentioned by a guest…He also noted a review had cited “the bearded big guy” and while this is presumably the Front Desk Supervisor (FDS), you have to be mentioned by name to receive the bonus…Besides, ol’ Sparrow is bearded and not small, so it could’ve been me they were talking about.

The FDS had to wait for ground transportation tonite…The town is packed – downtown was really hopping – and the ride shares he usually uses for the 5-minute drive home were busy…What’s funny is the FDS doesn’t live that far away and he could’ve been home for a half-hour by the time he got picked up.

Tho the weather here was pretty good, there were delays in other places and the final airline crew of the nite didn’t get here until 0245…In fact, their days had been such a fiasco that three of them didn’t know their schedule for later Saturday…One of them was on the phone with the home office, but the home office wasn’t being much help, and when they headed to their rooms they still didn’t know when they’d be leaving…Crew departure times are listed on the Housekeeping Report, but when you don’t know the time you don’t know the time, so we listed the three rooms under “Unknown”.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1430 Saturday until 2030 Saturday…6.0 hours for the day and an even-Steven 50.0 hours for the week.

We don’t know what the hell happened, either, except that we probably got too much sleep Friday…We’re not sure about that, tho…We were pretty tired when we went to bed and commenced reading this morning and we’re nodding off soon enuff, but there wasn’t any sleep to be had…We tried…The cat even came in and hopped on our back to encourage us along…Nothing, tho, so we resumed reading and actually got a nice little session in…Of course, we slept thru workout, but we can get one in tomorrow…Ever the optimist, we’re thinking that Mystery Girl (MG) will be there, too.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
