Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1621 – The Dutch West India Company receives a charter for a territory in the New World called New Netherland. The colony, faced with angry Indians and encroaching British, was given to the British in 1664, with settlements and outposts in what today are the states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.

In 1902 – Mike O’Neil of the St Louis Cardinals becomes the first major league player to hit a pinch-hit grand slam home run in an 11-9 win over the Boston Braves. The Cardinals trailed 8-5 heading into the 9th inning when O’Neil, a pitcher and an outfielder, pinch-hit for pitcher Ed Murphy with the bases loaded. On this date in 1978, Davey Johnson of the Philadelphia Phillies became the first major leaguer to do it twice in the same season.

In 1978 – The O’Jays are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the second of five consecutive weeks with Used Ta Be My Girl. It was the 15th of 25 Top 40 soul hits for the group and their third of ten #1 soul hits, and the song later peaked at #4 on the Hot 100.  The legendary songwriting team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff wrote the song.
