Yes, it’s Read Free Sunday at The Diary.
It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Assistant Front Desk Manager Q was playing travel agent when we reported for duty at the hotel…There were two older ladies huddling around him at the front desk and it turned out they needed places to stay for later in their trip.
(When we drove up and saw them we thought they were from the home office and were in the process of making Q’s life a living hell…This makes some zero sense, of course, because hoteliers on the road aren’t going to be working at the front desk at 2300…They’re going to be in bed perhaps, probably, sleeping a bender off.)
Q had some news, too: Gina is no longer with us…Recall Gina would usually have been there tonite but Q reported she’s gone…Evidently, her cleaning business is up and running now and she’s been cutting back recently and now decided to cut back to zero…This probably means we’ve seen the last of Gabriella hanging around the front desk, too.
Q also had some gossip: Kylie might not be around too much longer…Recall she was so late Wednesday morning that AGM Brandon had to come in to relieve me, with Q noting this really peeved Brandon, something that was plain Wednesday morning…Kylie, tho, came back strong, obliging Brandon to drive seven hours roundtrip because of a mistake she made.
What happened was Kylie gave a guest a key to a room they weren’t entitled to enter and when the real guest came back BOOM they discovered all their luggage was gone…What happened was some guy asked for a key to room 215 saying he was with a company that had several rooms rented and was picking up a co-worker’s luggage…No one, however, verified if 215 was one of the company’s rooms or not, so the key was made and the luggage was transported several hours south of here, to the next job site, so Brandon went and got it…Still unclear is the status of the luggage that should’ve been picked up and this may always be a wonder of the front desk.
We were up a tad earlier than ideal for Saturday (see Sleep Log below) because a phone was ringing…At first, we thought it was a phone ringing in the dream we were having but we were driving a car in some city we didn’t recognize, so that couldn’t’ve been it…Plus, the ringing continued after we woke up…It wasn’t the cell phone, tho, because 1) we’ve learned that lesson and it was turned off, 2) it’s always on vibrate anyway and, 3) it was a landline-type ring.
The landline!!!
Good gravy, who would be calling that???…Longtime readers of this crap may – or they may not – recall we’ve had one of those internet landlines for a year or so but who the hell has the number for it???…We haven’t given it out and, frankly, we’re not even too sure what it is…Plus, it’s not from a traditional phone company, so it’s not on most telemarketer’s call sheets.
We were prepared to execute a patented Sparrow rollover and defer the matter until later when it rang again…So we get up and Caller ID reports it’s coming from our area code, which could mean anything…It’s a humongous area code, covering the western and northern parts of the state…We asked the cat who it could’ve been and she didn’t know and a search didn’t turn up anything, either.
So we were in the gym earlier than usual for Saturday but we were strong anyway, getting in the new, upped-weight regular workout…This included squats on the Smith machine, which still hasn’t had that thingy replaced but we’ve established it’s still working normally…It was good to be doing squats again because ass-to-grass squats take more effort than the cable leg press we used the last couple of times.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0900 Saturday until 1500 Saturday…6.0 hours for the day and 49.0 hours for the week…You hate to come this close to the 50-hour mark and miss it, but what are you going to do???…There was not reasonable to expect the landline to ring.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
