The Diary of a Nobody/October 14

Sure, Read Free Sunday (RFS) is a thing today.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, October 14
There were some changes to the hotel’s front desk when we reported for duty…Assistant Front Desk Manager Q was there to ask if we noticed what was missing.

We didn’t, which shows how far our powers of observation are slipping…What was noticeable was the paneling on the wall in the back of the front desk: wood paneling with the hotel’s logo on it and it looks pretty sharp…What we did not notice was the stand, with a cabinet and drawers, was missing…Q pointed it out for us and we sighed because there goes even more storage at the front desk…Recall the lobby remodeling took out our spacious, useful front desk, leaving us with two small pods for each workstation…Now there is even less storage, making this the least functional front desk in the history of lodging.

163 checked in around midnite and was calling to whine five minutes later…It seemed his room should’ve been placed out of order: a nightstand and a chair were actually on the bed, the heater wasn’t working and the bathtub was leaking.

We had some pretty funny – well moderately funny, lines – ready, too…Classics like “we charge extra for that” and “what’s your complaint, sir?”, but when you’ve been knocking around the Front Desk Humor Racket (FDHR) as long as we have you know when lines like these will and when they will not go over well and we knew a no-nonsense type like Mr R would take a very dim view of them especially this late, so we kept them to ourselves…We had some availability and by chance 165, a suite and right next door to boot, was available and we told him we would take $50 off his bill for the inconvenience.

We slept thru the eclipse…It was supposed to start at 0900 or so here and we’re either sleeping or darn close to it then and it was one of those where the moon doesn’t completely block the sun – an annular eclipse – and we weren’t getting a hundred percent of it here anyway, so why bother???…Longtime readers of this crap recall six years ago we drove three hours to the middle of nowhere in the state north of here – a state that has sufficient middle of nowhere for the entire Union – for 88 seconds of totality and when you’ve had totality there’s no reason to alter your sleep schedule for mere annular.

There was pretty good strength in the gym this afternoon…Not new normal workout strength, but old normal workout strength – a plate less – but we were up earlier than usual (see Sleep Log below) and not fully rested…We’re not complaining about that, tho…It’s been a great week in the sack – we’ve completely recovered from last week’s debacle – and it was a gorgeous fall day so instead of executing a patented Sparrow Roll Over (SRO) for more sleep we got up and went to the gym and were back at The Shire and at the desk for project work with the windows open by 1630.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0900 Saturday until 1430 Saturday…5.5 hours for the day – a decent tho hardly spectacular finale – and 53.5 hours for the week, over 15 hours more than last week.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
