Yay for Read Free Sunday at The Diary.
It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Saturday, December 30
The big news at the hotel is the economies at the hotel appear to have been extended from sundry stand items to office supplies…We have been barely scraping by with paper clips for a while now and today the Assistant Front Desk Manager (AFDM) reported that not only were we down to what was left in the paper clip dispensers, but that he wasn’t allowed to order more!!!.
This is tuff because a hotel front desk in general – and nite auditors specifically – go thru paper clips left and right…We use them when we sort out the restaurant receipts and when attaching key packets to registration cards and when we finished our nite’s labors there were only a half-dozen or so remaining…We economized, too, saving precious paper clips by not clipping stacks of 20 fives and 25 ones together in the cash drawers.
The AFDM’s ride was late (he could’ve walked home in the time he spent waiting) and he was there when Nurse K checked in…Oh, good gravy, she was love at first sight when we first saw her a couple of weeks ago…She’s a regular but she’s usually checked-in before we’ve arrived and she greeted the AFDM with familiarity and in what is not the Upset of the Year we remembered her name and greeted her with it…We were hoping she’d comment on this so we could use a line we had stored up – “some people you simply do not forget” – which probably would’ve had her immediately discarding her clothes but she’s married and even if she wasn’t, we don’t need any commotion in our life right now.
Business was good tonite…Occupancy was 80% – the highest it’s been in a while – and revenue was over $31K making for an average daily rate (ADR; room revenue/rooms rented) of $334, which was actually a bit less than the two nites I was gone.
Proof that ol’ Sparrow will whine about absolutely anything can be found in the fact we are whining about having overslept today (see Sleep Log below)…It’s been a great week in the sack and it continued today with ol’ Sparrow racking up even more hours than usual for Saturday, which is generally a pretty good sleep session (SS)…And the thing is we weren’t even any more tired than usual when we retired this morning and our usual eight-to-nine hours was forecasted.
We woke up eleven hours later…We are not making that up…We tend to sleep facing away from the alarm clock and we woke up, feeling great, we rolled over – knocking the cat off our back – and BOOM it was 2030…Crap…Not only is that a couple of hours later than usual for the Saturday Sleep Session (SSS), but it’s too late to get in for workout…I mean, even if we hustled, the earliest we could get in there was 2100 and we’d have to be out of there in 30 minutes so we could be at the hotel on time…This produced a classic Yay/Boo situation: Boo because we missed Saturday workout…Yay, tho, because we missed it due to eleven hours of sleep, which means we’ll be strong enuff for a workout Sunday morning.
We’ve had some good sleep the past couple of weeks and key to this, I think, is we are not getting up to use the can as often as we used to…Usually, an 11-hour sleep session could be counted on to produce a minimum of two trips to the can – and as likely as not three – but we’ve been taking a new supplement and it seems to be taking hold.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1915 Saturday until 2015 Saturday…11.0 hours for the day and 57.0 hours for the week, a spectacular total that regular readers of this crap know in only two hours off our PB.
Not only were the eleven hours wonderful, the sleep itself completely ruled, too…We slept deeply and dreamt vividly – seemingly in 3D TechniColor with SurroundSound – and the dreams were pleasant, too and we woke up feeling we probably should’ve paid someone admission.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
