The Diary of a Nobody/December 1

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Friday, December 1
Recall the goal for this morning’s workout was to cut the time down to less than the hour-and-a-half plus it took yesterday…We were able to do that by lessening the time between sets and we were done in an hour and ten minutes, shaving more than a half-hour off our time…As noted, this will be important for the Saturday and Tuesday workouts when we have to go to the hotel later and may not have unlimited time.

It was pretty easy to trim some time, too…We had been walking around the gym a couple of times after getting off the spin bike and then getting some water which invariable leads to more farting around…So we thought back to some advice we’d heard about taking only as much time between sets as it takes for your breathing to get back to normal.

Less time between sets means less recovery, of course, and it shouldn’t be the Upset of the Year to find out that boy, this workout was utterly wearying, the hardest work we’ve put in in since yesterday’s exhausted…But it’s a good exhaustion.

We made a couple of changes, too…That pain in our right elbow that we hoped would go away after three weeks off is still there, as bad as before…So we’ve stopped bench pressing and are using the pec deck now and we’re still experimenting with tricep exercises…Today we did a deal we do not know the name of but you put a knee and a hand on a bench with your upper arm parallel to the floor…You hold a dumbbell and let it hang down and then you move your hand back until your entire arm is parallel with the floor…We didn’t particularly like this exercise, but it will grow on us…We hope…Of course it will, because it is better than not doing any tricep work at all.

Boy, the cat threw a fright into me when we got home from the gym…She wasn’t in the kitchen when walked in – not really a surprise because she wasn’t expecting/demanding yummies or treats –  but she also wasn’t in her bed in front of the heater…This is where the fright came because the bed had been turned upside down and we still have no idea why…Holding our breath and fearing she was underneath the bed dead, we turned it over but, thankfully, she wasn’t there and we eventually found her snoozing on our bed, which she doesn’t do all that often but maybe she was in the mood for some flannel sheets.

The big news is we washed our wallet yesterday – thank God our lottery ticket wasn’t in there –  so while it dried we transferred a couple of things to a temporary wallet…Not among those items was the key to the veterans service office (VSO)…This really wasn’t that big a deal, tho…We went to the main building and rustled up Facilities Steve and he let us in, but he also brought along a space heater because the goddamed heat in the new county building (NCB) went out again yesterday…Steve is getting frustrated, too…Crossing the street he said $14 million worth of building should be having these problems…He added winter was a lousy time for the heat to go out and while he didn’t specify the problems, he said it wouldn’t surprise him if they weren’t fixed until spring…The space heater actually kept the VSO warm, too, with the wall thermostat reporting it was a nice 68° all day…We unplugged it before we left for the day, too, so you should be able to store meat by Monday morning.

The new shearling coat made its debut today when we wore it to the VSO, too…It was in the low 20s out and the shearling kept me warm, hardly a surprise, but you may not want to use it when its much colder because while you can add layers, the sleeves are not cuffed, so you’ve got cold air going up your arm…You might think that for a grand you’d get cuffed sleeves, but something this nice is not designed to be your go-to brutal cold winter coat, it’s designed to look sharp and keep you warm for social occasions that do not demand a full overcoat…Still tho, we anticipate it getting more than modest use this winter.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
1400 Thursday until 0100 Friday
1730 Friday until 2130 Friday

15.0 hours for the day – a whopper – and 41.5 hours for the week, not the highest Friday total (FT) ever, but a solid enuff one heading into the finale, the Saturday Sleep Session (SSS).

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
