Yay for Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.
It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Saturday, September 10
The big news is The System – which went down Sunday morning on our shift and ended up being a worldwide outage – is mostly back up and running…Third-party reservations are making it thru again, tho the app we use to access reward club member profiles so we can get their point total and put it on their key packet is still tits up, but there’s a workaround and we were back to normal this morning.
Amy reported a bear had been farting around the parking lot for most of the past hour and had drawn a crowd…She added some of the Forest Service folks staying with us were out there, apparently giving wildlife tours to civilians and we asked her if she charged admission and she said no, logistically there really wasn’t enuff time to set it up.
I don’t really think bears know the power they wield over us…If they did, they’d stop hibernating over the winter and take over because everyone craps their pants anytime they’re in sight even tho bear maulings are very rare.
I don’t think anybody’s updated rate in The System for the offseason…I checked rates for tonite and despite being far from sold out the rate they were asking was just under $300 which is completely whack for the weekend after Labor Day…And occupancy is appropriately slow during the week and there is really no reason to be charging this much…In fact, when a guy came in looking for a room we quoted him $200 and we thought we’d be in for some haggling but no, he bit without batting an eye…Honestly, no one was walking out without a room tonite, and we probably would’ve gone as low as $150.
It was tough getting to sleep this morning, but it ended up being a very good morning…It was 0945, about 30 minutes later than we normally could’ve expected to fall asleep, and we were still up when the phone rings…Caller ID says it’s from the city where state VSO training is next week so we answer, just for funsies because we generally do not take unscreened calls and it turns out to be a chef from the steakhouse at the 5-star hotel we’ve been to before.
There’s a reason he’s calling me…Years ago we had a schnitzel there that was as good a meal as we’ve had, but it hasn’t been on the menu since…So last week we emailed them and asked if, you know, schnitzel might be a thing when we’re in town next week and that is exactly what Chef Justin, God bless him, wanted to discuss…He said the chef at the steakhouse remembers the dish and it would be a pleasure to have it whenever I was there…I told him I had a reservation for Tuesday at 1900 and he said great, it will be on the menu that nite, the only question was did we happen to recall the side dish, red cabbage or warm potato salad…Well, we had some zero clue, however, we think we would’ve remembered warm potato salad and we’re staying away from potatoes now anyway, so we said we seemed to recall it was the cabbage and he said fine, everything’s in order.
Damn, you can’t beat that…An all-time fave dish at an all-time fave restaurant…Fortunately, my attempts to secure a dining companion on the dating app have failed miserably, so we won’t have to bother with a date and will be free to enjoy the evening on our own.
I’m feeling pretty good now, of course, so good luck getting to sleep, so we got up and got some laundry going, paid the American Express bill, and renewed our AAA membership before settling in for some reading.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1230 Saturday until 2130 Saturday…9.0 hours for the week and 50.5 hours for the week, both solid totals tho not, of course, PBs.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
