The Diary of a Nobody/October 8

Read Free Sunday (RFS) is in full effect.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, October 8
The long-awaited remodeling of the lobby and front desk is underway and the big news is ol’ Sparrow picked up on the first subtle hint right off…It came in the back office, where the printer was gone…Immediately we told ourselves the printer was gone – there was no standing with hands on hips staring crossly and wondering what the deal was on this one – and then we asked Amy why the printer was gone.

She said it was probably in the “new front desk area” and I asked where that was and she said where the old bike/ski storage room is, the one that has been worked on for the past couple of weeks, tho we had no idea what they were doing.

Now we do, and Amy said it should be done by the first of December, which we don’t altogether believe, but what do we know….The new front desk area is rather small but it won’t be for that long, but the big question is – and it’s a question whose answer will determine if the remodeling period will or will not be a living hell for yours truly – whether or not the back office will remain open or is also being remodeled.

If it is being remodeled, whoa Nelly…One, it will be logistical pain in the neck because the back office has years and years’ worth of stuff stored and accumulated…Two, it will cause ol’ Sparrow to weep because he will likely have to spend eight hours a nite actually manning the front desk, which goes against everything he stands for.

Two of the lessons the years have offered ol’ Sparrow tho, are 1) that initial negative impressions are usually wrong and that, 2) most things work out if you let them and we are going to give this every opportunity to work out.

Honestly, tho, there doesn’t appear to be a reason to remodel the back office…I mean, guests never see it, so there’s hardly any brand standards on the matter but here, too, sometimes ol’ Sparrow doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Amy said swing shift was swamped, tho this was plain because morning coffee service (MCS) was still out…Also, those mats they have for us to stand on are missing…I even checked under the doggie bed and no dice…Now that we think about it, tho, this probably doesn’t have anything to do with swing shift being busy.

The big news – and it’s pretty big – is that there was a strong troika at the gym tonite!!!…I am not making that up…We were up early (see Sleep Log below) and when a patented Sparrow Roll Over (SRO) didn’t yield further sleep we began to consider option…We could wake up and report to the chair for reading duty and then, perhaps, some project work and then it hit us: let’s go move some weight…The only argument against it was we’d worked out both Thursday and Friday and while you can be strong on consecutive days, our field tests showed that strength diminished considerably on Day 3…On the other hand, our new workout supplements have stuff for recovery plus we didn’t do leg work Friday, so those would be strong so we said screw it, we’ll present ourselves to move some weight and see what happens.

(This would give us a couple of hours to kill before the hotel, but there’s always some project work to do, so that wouldn’t be too big of a deal.)

We got a bit later start than we’d planned because at about 1730 there’s a knock on the door, we are not making that up, either…The cat, who’s sitting contentedly on the kitchen table while I get packed, and I look at each other at the same time, both wondering who the hell it could be because no one ever knocks on our door…We move the curtain at the kitchen door and it’s Gary, from the Legion post in the town south of here…He was heading home from the district meeting in the next county and thought he’d stop by to see if there was any news on the funeral we’re providing an honor guard for next Thursday.

There is actually…I told him I had an order of service drawn up and he said he would have some people from his town and he noted Frank had some people from our small town who would be there, too, and he could provide whatever rifles and flags we needed…This is good…Gary, Frank, and I would be able to provide a dignified send-off, but the more the merrier as they say, and we should have a nice turnout.

Strength at the gym was very good…Shoulders and biceps were Thursday strong – we’ll take that  – and we got twelve reps up for 170 on the bench press and the stack for tricep cable pulldowns, which is two more than we were expecting…We’ll take that, too…We returned to the squat machine, too, and got eight reps on the first two sets and, perversely enuff, ten reps on the third set…Cardio was strong and we got a full soak in, too, altho the pools were jammed packed.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0900 Saturday until 1630 Saturday…7.5 hours for the day and 54.5 hours for the week, a fine total…Why we didn’t get our usual Saturday ten-12 hours in the sack may never be known, but we got a good workout in and this will set up a wonderfully leisurely Sunday morning after getting back from the hotel.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
