It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Friday, October 7
It was a pretty leisurely morning at The Shire…After project work was done, we baked some more chicken, which is turning out to be very good nutrition. We kicked it up a notch, too, cutting notches in the top of the thighs so the Worcester sauce and Lawry’s season salt could really work their way in there…We also got the laundry folded, with all five shorts and t-shirts accounted for…Even with all this activity, tho, a Level I cleaning was not even considered, much less accomplished.
The new beanie was a great purchase and offhand we’re calling it Beanie Purchase of the Year…Not only is it the warmest one we have, but the bottoms did not ride up over the lower ear at all on the drive into the gym…There’s still more field testing to do, of course, but if it holds out for a 30-minute drive, it will probably stay down all the time.
Fresh off moving excellent weight yesterday, we had high hopes for this morning’s session and we got everything we wanted to done…Shoulder side lateral raises were up to 25 lbs on the last set, bicep hammer curls were 30s and we did the stack on tricep cable pulldowns ten times…The only problem was the Smith machine was busy when we were ready to use it, but the chest cable press is a satisfactory substitute, and we moved ten more pounds on the final set than we usually do and the big news is ol’ Sparrow is stronger now than he was this time last month.
There’s this guy at the gym, really built, tho he always wears a sweatsuit so it’s tuff to see specific muscles, but it’s plain he’s in world-class condition and he might well be a bodybuilder…Anyway, I’m doing tricep cable pull downs and he’s at the squat machine putting plates on…And not tens or 25s, either; he’s putting the big dogs, 45s, on and after he puts two on each side – 180 pounds, plus the apparatus – we think he’s ready for some work…Thing is, tho, he keeps putting plates on, three more on each side – five total – and you don’t have to be Einstein to figure out that’s 450 pounds…Christ…And he’s been doing barbel squats and other leg work all morning…He grabs a couple of spotters and he gets one rep in and you don’t have to be Arnold to know that 450 is one hell of a one-rep max in these circumstances.
The Friday Biddies and another old guy who’s been there the past few Fridays were in my fave hot spring when we reported for soaking duty…His name is George and he’s getting up there in years, too, and apparently, they’ve all known each other for years and have been going to the same church since the Reformation because they are always chatting about church business…There wasn’t an instructor for the 0700 Old Biddy WaterFit class, but they all left at the usual time anyway and went thru the motions on their own.
It was pretty slow at the veterans service office…I did text Scott to ask if he’d gotten a flag yet for Mr Sanders’ funeral next Thursday (so we can present it to the widow) and he said no…I would’ve thought the funeral home would’ve taken care of that, but it’s no big deal because post offices have them…We filled out the appropriate form for Scott, put it in an envelope and placed it in the brochure rack outside the office…With that and a DD-214, the post office – or a VA facility – will give you a flag.
Lunch was at the college dining hall…They had some fish and some veggie patties and while the hot dogs weren’t out of the Nutrition Handbook (NH), if you ignore the bun and only eat the frank(s) they’re not the worst calories you can have…We stayed away from the french fries, too, and combined with chicken we’d brought from home and ate at 0800, it was a solid day of nutrition.
The big news is my membership at the gym needs to be renewed on the 11th…I asked about doing it last week, but it’s thru the county (at only a $5/month savings off a yearly contract, but $30/month off the no-contract monthly rate) and I need the form signed…So I emailed Stephanie in HR and she sent it to me and we filled it out and took it down for her signature…Also, the gal at the hot springs advised me to take care of it on the 11th, because otherwise your date of membership changes and you lose out on the few days you paid for.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
1630 Thursday until 0030 Friday
1630 Friday until 2130 Friday
13.0 hours for the day and 47.0 hours for the week, totals regular readers of this crap know are both fabulous figures heading into Saturday’s finale.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
