It’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.
It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Saturday, October 22
Boy, the nite at the hotel started to be complete chaos before finally settling down at 0100 or so.
First off, the ADP app on my phone that’s used to clock in and out finally demanded – after requesting it for a week or so – that I change my password…This was easier than I thought because I’d long forgotten the old password thanks to fingerprint log in…All ol’ Sparrow had to do was answer his security questions, provide a new password, and BOOM, have that password not accepted when we tried to log in…I am not making that up…We did it again and it worked this time, and we were able to clock in.
Then we noticed there were an awful lot of registration cards still in the Due In slot in the card holder…Some checking shows there’s only one remaining arrival so what’s the deal with the other registration cards???…It could be they were canceled or checked in with another card printed out and placed in the bucket or checked in without a signed registration card…The only way to find out was to check each one individually…The easiest way to do this was to type the confirmation number in the Update Reservation section and check its status…Most, it turned out, had been checked in with different registration cards printed and signed, tho a few had been checked in without a signed registration card.
The big news is we got a strong weight session in tonite…This was not guaranteed, because we had trouble falling asleep this morning…This was a surprise because, recall, we hadn’t slept well Thursday or Friday and we were sufficiently tired that falling asleep at 0830 or so was certainly doable but The Fates conspired to keep us up (see Sleep Log below) and when we didn’t fall asleep by 0930 we got up and did some reading…That didn’t work, either, tho the slightest of yawns at 1030 or so sent us back to bed and that didn’t produce immediate rest, either.
It should be noted here that we’ve been farting around with the thermostat since first turning the heater on a couple of weeks ago…The Ex used to keep it at 69 – a pretty toasty temperature, frankly – and since we’ve been alone we’ve generally kept it a 67 tho at times we’ve lowered it to 65…This produces a noticeably cooler house and that’s where it was at this morning…We got up to use the can and we found ourselves actually shivering and we were still shivering when we slid into the new flannel sheets again and we figured this might be while we were still up, so we went and bumped the heater up to 67, hoping this migh help matters.
It did, but now it’s not only late enuff to not call a Saturday nite workout into question, but also a Sunday morning one as well, because if we only get a few hours, we probably won’t want to workout after a refreshing eight hours of work at the hotel…Still tho, we were asleep soon enuff and we woke up again at 1800.
We looked at the clock and considered matters…Crap, if we hustle we could get into town and get at least a lifting session in…On the other hand, if patented Sparrow Roll Over (SRO) yielded another three hours of sleep, we’d be good for a Sunday morning troika…We know ourselves well enuff to know that more sleep probably wasn’t coming, tho, so we got up and were out the door in pretty good time and on the gym floor at 1915, ready to see what strength was there for us.
There was pretty good strength waiting for us, as progress was made on the squat machine, the bench press, and the cable tricep machine…Despite not getting all the sleep we wanted, we were able to add five pounds to each side of the squats for the last set and moved that ten times – a new PB tho, of course, this is a new exercise and progress is quick right now…For the bench press, we moved 180 lbs ten times on the last set, up from nine reps last time out, and the tricep machine was 85, 15 lbs more than the old usual…Shoulders and biceps were the same.
It was an efficient workout, too, and if wanted to we could’ve squished in cardio or a 30-minute soak, but we were pleased with the weight we moved and opted for a leisurely shower, which included shaving the dome and the first application of that wash-that-gray-right-out-of-your-beard wash.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1200 Saturday until 1800 Saturday…6.0 hours for the day – an unsatisfactory total – and 49.0 hours for the week, a pretty good total, but less than the 50+ hours we’ve become accustomed to.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
