It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Thursday, July 8
Officially, whether or not to go to the gym this morning was going to be a game-time decision but, as noted yesterday, we strongly suspected we were not going to leave the house today, a suspicion that was confirmed immediately upon waking up this morning (see Sleep Log below)…As we like to say from time to time, we get one day off between 60-hour work weeks and we were in the mood to do nothing, so nothing was done; everything could wait…Fortunately, the lawn had been mowed and watered Monday, so we were completely guilt-free about taking a Sparrow Day today.
Well, there was the most cursory Level I cleaning was done: we did the dishes and cleaned the cat box, completely losing our mind, actually, and dumping out the old litter and putting fresh litter in…That was it, tho; vacuuming could wait another week and laundry could wait until tomorrow.
The big news is ol’ Sparrow was on a podcast today…I am not making that up…One of my ubiquitous projects is available for public consumption now and we signed up with an outfit that helps people get booked as podcast guests…It was a podcast out of India, of all places, and while it seemed like we were being interviewed by tech support at the hotel, it went very well…The service lets you set up what’s called a one-sheet, and part of that is you putting in ten questions your interviewer could ask and Naveen asked most of them, and actually sounded like he had read the book, which we doubt…Naveen’s English wasn’t too bad and we chatted for over half an hour and there are a couple of more podcasts scheduled, tho not for a while.
Editor’s Note: the project can be found here. Your discretion in not blabbing the author’s true identity is as presumed as it is appreciated.
My commitment to a Sparrow Day was so total that we couldn’t even be bothered to drive to the next county despite the fact we needed to both eat lunch and buy things at the retailer and we left the house only twice, once to go to the convenience store for a couple of breakfast sandwiches and later to go to the post office and to the town hall to pay the utility bill.
The utility bill was $257, too, but we neglected to pay it last month for some reason, a stark violation of your get-a-bill-pay-a-bill policy, a policy which, as it turns out, could not be more violated if we were issued prizes for non-compliance.
While I was writing out the check we noted to Sarah the Clerk that this was now the only check we wrote now, online and automatic bill paying having taken over all other payment obligations…She smiled and said I wasn’t the only one and noted that all check writing could be eliminated entirely by setting up automatic bill pay for this, too…This was dismissed, tho, with ol’ Sparrow noting that one, he rather enjoys coming to the town hall to pay his utility bill and, two, he has what will likely turn out to be a lifetime supply of checks at The Shire ready for fiscal duty standing by…Sarah nodded knowingly, noting we weren’t the only ones in this predicament.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1930 Wednesday until 0100 Thursday…5.5 hours for the day – a depressing total – and 28.5 hours for the week, a correspondingly grim figure.
I have no idea what the deal was…Recall Wednesday was an insanely long day – longer than usual – and you would expect more than 5.5 hours of sleep following that, but you’d be wrong…We weren’t all that tired when we got home from chauffeuring Mickey to the VA hospital and while a patented Sparrow Roll Over (SRO) probably would’ve yielded more sleep, regular readers of this crap know this is more or less the time we get up on Thursday mornings anyway, and the cat was standing post on the edge of the bed besides, offering quiet encouragement for a canned yummy ration issue, so we decided to get up.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
