The Diary of a Nobody/January 14

Read Free Fortnight rolls on. Enjoy today’s entry with our compliments.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, January 14
Boy, there was some good strength in the gym this morning…I almost missed out on it, too, because yours truly came pretty close to blowing it off.

I was done with project work around 0400 or so and the gym doesn’t open until 0600 so there was some time to kill and it was killed by lying in the chair listening to stuff…In impressive, short order I was starting to doze off and when the time came to start getting ready yours truly found it tuff to get going and before too long – in what is not the Upset of the Year – the excuses were starting to form.

Well, this where workout programs are abandoned: the first one is tuff to miss, but succeeding ones get easier and easier to blow off and before too long it was time to either surrender to my weaknesses or conquer them…The excuse that I get one day off between 60 hour work weeks was really asserting itself followed closely by the save gas, save natural resources excuse but then I said screw it and got up, doing a Level I clean-up before heading in.

I was strong enuff to get the bench press up ten times instead of the weakling six reps Tuesday morning and the big news is I was able to up the weight on the cable shoulder press ten pounds…I am not making that up and upping weight at my advanced age is very good for morale.

I resumed doing leg work, too, with the leg extension machine and following that with the cable leg press machine, same deal as the other exercises: three sets of ten, with the last set the tenth rep being failure.

It was the Mexican joint for lunch today in the next county, a bit of an upset because the Italian place was the morning line favorite due to an early-week craving for a Stromboli but on the drive out the Mexican joint started asserting itself…Well, you know me: go with your gut, so there I was, in the drive-thru of the Mexican joint with a girl who doesn’t know ol’ Sparrow’s usual order…She was obliged to ask for confirmation when I was ordering and she was still flummoxed when I was at the window she read it back…Good thing, too, because she had the main ingredient in the burrito wrong and we were able to correct it before it was submitted to the cook.

The big news is I bought a different coffee at the retailer…I am not making that up…The usual donut shop knockoff – while still officially in favor as the Official Coffee of Sparrow’s Morning Routine (OCSMR) – could use a break, so some time was spent in the coffee aisle staring at the selections with my hands on my hips.

Nothing was really asserting itself, tho…Experience has shown that some of the other retailer house brands are without merit and the leading national brands are swill and then I spotted a 12-ounce package of their breakfast blend, which longtime readers of this crap may – or they may not – recall was actually in regular rotation with the donut shop knockoff until the retailer in town stopped selling it a couple of years ago…I don’t really like the 12-ounce package…It’s about a third of the usual can I buy and per ounce, it’s more expensive, but I bought one anyway just for funsies because it was the only size they had…It’s the third decade of the 21st-century, of course, and I could buy a lifetime supply online tomorrow, but I don’t want home delivery of coffee (it’s not available for convenient store pickup), I want to be able to buy it at the store.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1730 Wednesday until 0030 Thursday…7.0 hours for the night and a solid 27.5 hours for the week.

I had to get up to use the can more than is preferred, but otherwise, it was a solid sleep, including a dream about yours truly walking into an old diner in LA…I grew up in LA but Pa Sparrow never took us to dive diners downtown, which is what and where this diner was…It had a green and white floor and green and white booths, and green is a favorite color, tho what message from the Great Beyond this was sending remains a mystery.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
