The Diary of a Nobody/January 12

Enjoy today’s entry with Sparrow’s compliment. It’s Read Free Fortnight.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Tuesday, January 12
Nicole is leaving!!!

I am not making that up…Amy had the tragic news when I reported for duty at the hotel…I was reviewing the freshly-updated reward club signup numbers on the back office whiteboard and I noted Nicole was up to twelve now and blabbed to Amy that was one more than she had when Amy noted she’d end up beating here and then dropping the bomb:

– …she wont last the month, anyway.
– Uh, why not?
– She gave notice…Two weeks…She’s going back to Florida.

And just like that, the Nicole Era is over…I don’t know nor, frankly, do I particularly care why, but if you’re looking for quality front desk work in the freezing cold, hit me up, I’ll point you to the online application.

Amy, not for the first time, showed that she has to be the only person currently working a hotel front desk who can count her drawer and announce it would still be off…Not only that, it wasn’t even off by as much as she claimed it would be off…She was actually counting the right drawer when I reported for duty which regular readers of the crap know is itself a bulletin because usually she doesn’t bother, preferring to leave ol’ Sparrow to drop whatever’s over…Tonight, tho, she counted the drawer and took out her drop and printed the spreadsheet and she still didn’t have an accurate drawer, announcing that it was still four dollars over.

And she was wrong about that!!!…I am not making that up because when I counted, and recounted, the drawer it was five dollars off both times…Some would get peeved at relieving, pretty regularly, a desk clerk who can’t get the drawer right but regular readers of this crap know Amy and I go way back and yours truly takes it in stride.

The Tuesday morning gym session was good…Well rested, I had good strength on everything except the bench press, which I only got up six times on the final set…This was surprising because even tho the Sunday workout was blown off, if I’d’ve known ahead of time six would be it I would have done a lesser weight on the last set.

It was bitterly cold this morning, a tad below zero, and there was so much fog coming off the water in the hot springs that the fog when it hit the cold air was dense it was difficult to see more than few feet in front of you…Which means you can’t jump around playing Aquaman…But there were so few people in the pools this morning you could probably get away with it.

I’ve been considering dinner options for Wednesday afternoon after the Veterans Service Office (VSO)…Recall last week I used the restaurant group gift card for their burger joint with OK, tho not great results, except for the fact it was free…There is still a tad more than $90 on the card and I’ve been debating whether to go to a few places until it’s gone or blow it at one spot on a really good meal and offhand I’m leaning toward the latter.

They got a pretty trendy American joint downtown, the place we had the Christmas party in 2019, and they have a pretty good steak and a foie gras side that looks wonderful and would pretty much blow the remaining amount…In fact, some offhand figuring showed – based on current consumption models – there is a high level of possibility yours truly would end up obliged to subsidize the gift card with a few bucks of his own.

On the other hand, their nice Italian place downtown has a calzone that appears to be demanding my attention, too, and $90 could produce as many as four visits…Something to consider is they have dine-in service again in the next county, and the Stromboli at that Italian joint is nothing to sneeze at but if I go Italian on Wednesday I can go to the Mexican joint in the next county on Thursday.

I finally got around to renewing the new ride’s registration…Recall in November I got the notification and I tried to do it right then, but it was too far away from the registration date and I wasn’t allowed to do it, but I did it online today and my tags will send within two weeks…It was due on December 31st actually, but there’s a grace period here in the state giving me to the end of the month and they emailed a temporary form in case I get pulled over, so it should all work out.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1400 Tuesday until 2130 Tuesday…7.5 hours for the day and 20.5 hours for the week, the highest Tuesday total (TT) since before Thanksgiving…Another great rest, too, only getting up once to use the can and a couple of patented Sparrow Roll-Overs were executed as well.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
