The Diary of a Nobody/August 7

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Friday, August 6
After the assault yours truly witnessed at the big city hotel Thursday evening that I couldn’t be bothered to stick around to give a statement on, you might be wondering exactly how bad a crime has to be before ol’ Sparrow will favor the authorities with his presence because plainly watching someone get sprayed with bear repellant isn’t sufficient.

(Recall the front desk manager bear sprayed a guest who had sashayed thru the lobby dropping an F-bomb or two, tho I don’t know the whole story tho I do know it was as stupid as it was unnecessary to spray the guy.)

Looking at it objectively, I think blood would have to be drawn or a bone showing, tho a death without either, of course, would very likely cause me to stick around.

But you don’t really want to talk with police, which may sound funny coming from someone who’s worked as much private security and is a general law-and-order type as ol’ Sparrow is…Because I’ve seen way too many people talk themselves into custody and what if yours truly did or did not do something that is criminally actionable and then I’m taken to county jail and in self-defense kill some punk bitch who got frisky with me and then BOOM I’m staring a life term or maybe even the gurney in the face…(Don’t laugh…There’s a documented case – and this can hardly be the only one – where a guy got pulled over, had warrants and was taken in, got into trouble at county jail that landed him in state prison and further problems saw him not getting out until 15 years after he’d been pulled over)

But there was no reason to get involved yesterday and when I checked out of the hotel at 0430 or so this morning everything appeared normal in the lobby: the glass doors were still intact and there wasn’t blood on the walls, so perhaps nothing came of it.

The big news at the veterans service office (VSO) is that the annual VSO training conference will be in-person this year…Recall it was virtual last year but it will be both this year…It’s in late September, too, later than usual which some people are whining about…It’s all day on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and half a day on Friday and I could go to the whole thing and only Tuesday/Wednesday off from the hotel.

And the big news is yours truly will be doing his customer service training on Friday, too…Evidently, it went over fairly well with Brian in the regional office saying he got several comments saying it was pretty useful, or at least no utterly useless…Or perhaps they’re merely really desperate for presentations…The good news is that dufus who ‘helped’ me out last time has left the department so he won’t be getting in my way.

I don’t know if I’ll go the whole time…I could take the first two days virtually and then head out for the Thursday and Friday sessions…On the other hand, the more I’m out there the more times I can go and enjoy the schnitzel at that place Terri and I went to Tuesday…On still another hand, tho, the conference is a bit south of the big city, tho some checking shows it’s only about 15 minutes away, which is a lot less than I thought.

Gary came by the VSO to deliver my game fees for the few games I umpired this summer: $180 cash…Considering ol’ Sparrow spent – at least – $500 on gear and uniforms, the net loss isn’t too bad…That comes out to $30/game, easy money considering the work involved but, of course, it was fun merely to get back out there after a couple of years off.

36.657 MPG

Less than the 40+ MPG we’ve been getting lately, but when you consider the trip to the big city is hardly all level, it’s not too bad.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 2030 Thursday until 0230 Friday…6.0 hours for the week and 30.0 hours for the week.

Boy, this was a lousy rest…I was up seemingly every hour on the hour to use the can, the first Multiple-Can Sleep Session (MCSS) in a while…Thinking about it, tho, it was hardly a bulletin because I’d forgotten to take my 14 supplements today and I’d eaten like crap.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
