The Diary of a Nobody/April 10

Of course, it’s Read Free Sunday at The Diary of a Nobody.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, April 10
Here are current reward club sign-up standings:

Assistant Front Desk Manager Q: 15
Amy: 10
Mark: 1
Heidi: 1
Everyone Else: 0

The race was actually more or less tied until today when Q cleaned up while Amy had the day off…Now, you might – or you might not – be thinking that it will be a close race this month, what with Amy back to working swing shift all the time, but recall yours truly has his road trip next week, and Amy will be working for me, so that will cut down on her sign-up opportunities.

Instead of a road trip, yours truly should be heading out to London, of course, for four days in one of ol’ Sparrow’s homelands before sailing back on a luxury cruise ship, tho COVID canceled that, of course, tho had it not and a vaccination been a requirement, I would have barely made it…I’ve started some casual glancing at future cruises and one this time next year should be doable, but there doesn’t seem to be a point until the Virus Era more or less passes which in Sparrow terms is to be interpreted as the 24-hour buffet is up and running and not closed for safety reasons…And with two grand already invested in appropriate clothing, you can bet ol’ Sparrow will be going sometimes, dammit.

Had I bothered to go into the Veterans Service Office (VSO) yesterday instead of declaring it a General Holiday the second anniversary and one day of yours truly taking over that honorable job could have been properly celebrated.

I still remember Stanko and Rick taking me aside after a Legion post meeting to ask me to consider taking Natalie’s job…Natalie had just resigned as post commander in addition to VSO and I thought they wanted me to consider being post commander again and I said sure because regular readers of this crap know ol’ Sparrow loves nothing better than being elected commander of something by acclamation…It turned out tho, they wanted me to apply for the VSO job, something yours truly would not have ordinarily considered because I was under the impression the job would be overwhelming and, frankly, more work than I was willing to put into earning a living.

Shows what I know…There is a lot to know but it’s hardly that difficult and the office is generally slow even when the county building is open and, of course, it’s good to be of service to my fellow veterans.

And this reinforced a lesson yours truly has been force-fed any number of times over the years: don’t draw conclusions based on things you presume and don’t actually know…Even with Stank and Rick’s encouragement ol’ Sparrow came this close to not applying for the job and if I hadn’t I would probably still be working at the retailer which is like forced labor in comparison.

Time is starting to fly by again…It did in my 20s and early 30s and then it settled down a bit but now two years at the VSO have passed very quickly and BOOM you’re 55 and at the stage where you’re no longer looking back at years passed but, instead, starting to look at the years you have left, which are less than the number of years you lived, unless you live to be 111 and who wants that?

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0830 Saturday until 2130 Saturday…13.0 triumphant hours for the day and sweet mother of Christ, 54.5 hours for the week.

I’ll tell you what, I was exhausted when I got home at 0815 and didn’t even bother: I fed the cat, took a shot PM cold medicine on the pretty flimsy premise of having had a fever Friday and BOOM ol’ Sparrow was out like a light.

I did wake up twice to use the can, but the second was late, around 1900 or so and we’re putting an asterisk next to it because I could have gotten up and started the day had but didn’t…A patented Sparrow Roll Over (SRO) was executed and more sleep gotten.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
