The Diary of a Nobody/October 13

Oh, go ahead and enjoy. It’s Read Free Fortnight.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Tuesday, October 13
Another sold out/dead slow night at the hotel, tho ol’ Sparrow is pleased to report both the box of coffee and the box of French vanilla creamer – both in the back coffee room – needed to be replaced, so the knife got some use this morning, both in opening the fresh boxes and in breaking down the old boxes…The coffee box probably could have gone another day without being replaced but, as noted, you don’t want the rascals on day shift wondering exactly what in the hell the night auditor is doing all goddamn night and there’s no reason to make Tammy do it.

A firefighter came up around 0600 or so wanting to “change” their stay…Fabulous, I thought, someone else I have to turn down because we are busy for the next few nights, but it turned out she actually needed to shorten her stay…I half wanted to say no, shortened stays aren’t allowed, you must complete your scheduled time here, but there was a line at the front desk and Morning Coffee Service needed attention, so I kept it for myself…I banked the line, tho, for another time, because while it may not be a Line of the Year candidate, it’s not too bad, even if I do say so myself.

I had to do without my glasses for a spell this morning, the second time this week I haven’t had them at the hotel…Recall earlier in the week I’d forgotten them at home…What happened was the gent in 143 came to drop off his laundry to be sent out…I had him fill out the slip but he didn’t have his glasses so I lent him mine, making a mental note to get them back…However, since yours truly can’t remember a goddamn thing anymore I forgot to get them back, despite the fact the mental note was made only a few seconds before, and he walked out wearing them…Fortunately, we had his number and I called him and he returned them.

The big news is the trash at The Shire was picked up for the first time in three weeks today…Recall the past couple of weeks it was put out later than the required 0700, tho that didn’t stop the bastards from driving past it twice last Tuesday…Good thing, too, because the can was as smelly as it was full.

I felt great when I woke up and got back in the gym today…Key for your first workout after being sickies is not to do too much and the last sets for all exercises today were weights that could have been moved twelve times or so, tho we only did the usual ten reps…Thursday we should be back to normal.

Boy, the River Route was a complete triumph today…I’ve been looking forward to this walk for a while and I was up early enuff (see Sleep Log below) so there was enuff daylight and boy, Mother Nature is certainly putting on a great show this year…The only fly in the ointment was the temperature, it was in the low 70s, still way above normal for mid-October here, but this merely further proof – as if more were required – that ol’ Sparrow will whine about anything…It was really a great experience.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1000 Tuesday until 1400 Tuesday…4.0 hours for the day and 17.5 hours for the week, both distressing figures…I don’t know what the deal was…I woke up at 1400 feeling strong and rarin’ to go but not even a patented Sparrow rollover could produce more sleep.

This will make for a long night at the hotel and long day at the veterans service office (VSO),  but one, I’m strong, two, I don’t work all that hard and three, these are hardly uncharted waters.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
