Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Saturday, May 16
Had to work to balance the checkbook again but unlike last time when I had do go back and manually audit every entry from the online bank statement with every entry in the checkbook app, today was relatively easy, merely doing some housekeeping.
There were some automatic payments that needed to be entered into the app, plus my county VSO direct deposit, and when I did that I was off $14 or so…Either over or short, I’m not sure, but the register app total was higher than the online statement…Then I discovered something or another and the difference was still a couple of bucks and change…Then I noticed I’d forgotten to enter the world wall map charge from the 8th…So I plug that in and BOOM the register is $30.15 over the statement’s total…Of course, this confuses me initially and I’m scanning the statement for a $30.15 charge before it hits me the error is on the register: I’ve entered $30.15 more than I’ve actually spent…Crap, this is new even for me.
Now, it’s entirely possible I misentered some figures to the tune of $30.15, but first I checked the register and sure enuff, there was an entry for $30.15 dated May 11…I have no idea what this entry was for because, of course, that amount wasn’t actually spent and I didn’t note what it was for on the entry, which I do sometimes…Shrug…I am now at the age where I am making random, non-existent entries into my online checkbook register…Duly noted…It was a simple matter to delete the entry and everything balanced again.
Still chilly for the morning walk…But warmish, too…Cool enuff for the watch cap, but I’ll be honest, I took off the gloves about halfway thru.
The recent rains have ensured that virtually every lawn in town needs to be mowed…Offhand, the only lawn I passed that showed signs of recent mowings was the Congregationalist church on Main Street, where the Holy Spirit must be doing some landscaping because nobody else in town is doing any mowing…There are lots of dandelions, too, which looks either good or bad depending on your point of view.
Cody, the kid I pay to mow The Shire’s lawn, texted me today trying to drum up some trade…Successfully, too, because The Shire’s lawn desperately needs a mowing…Fortunately, the forecast calls for sunny skies for the next few days, and I told him Monday or Tuesday, let’s give the ground a day or two to dry out because Pa Sparrow always said never mow a wet lawn…I’ve long forgotten why – it may well have been for the good of the mower more than anything – but I still remember it and tend to let the ground dry out as much possible first.
I was looking for an excuse to go to the next county for lunch at the Mexican joint but even tho I met one of the criteria by getting the walk in, I was unable to muster a reason to go to the retailer because I didn’t really need anything, so I made some hotcakes…Recall the last time I did this I didn’t have pancake batter and yours truly was reduced to using some cornbread mix with OK, but hardly great, results.
Grandpa always made hotcakes with crispy edges growing up and I still like them that way…(Pa Sparrow made them with normal edges…He grew up during the Depression and didn’t like to waste things and that included cooking oil.)…I’ll tell you what, yours truly had enuff oil on the griddle to fry chicken…It was wonderful…I even completely lost my mind and started buttering the hotcakes immediately after flipping them over, when they were still on the griddle!!!…I am not making that up…I utilized the patented Sparrow Buttered on the Griddle technique…It’s a hell of a technique, too, because if you wait until they are on the plate to butter them, they get cold…If you utilize the patented Sparrow Buttered on the Griddle technique, all you have to do is add syrup and BOOM no waiting, you’re enjoying your hotcakes.
I made a new Sparrow For US Senate video, too…I talked about how our country has blood on its hands from too many Virus Era deaths and how America is at the midway point between influence and oblivion (an original line I am rather pleased with) and I talked about how our country is calling us and wondered if anyone was listening…I mentioned the primary and how you can register to vote (for Sparrow) right up until Election Day…It will be on the website and on Tweeter and Faceplant first thing Monday morning.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
1830 Friday until 0130 Saturday.
1630 Saturday until 2030 Saturday
11.5 hours for the day and a fine 48.5 hours for the week…Actually, the pre-shift nap total is not entirely accurate…I woke up to use the can about 1930 or so and I felt pretty good and when I crawled back into bed the cat came and rested on my shoulder and from then on I spent a couple of hours drifting, rather pleasantly, in and out of sleep, so I tacked on an extra hour to the total and I think it’s a good total, but who really knows.
The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
