Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Saturday, May 2
I washed the new stuff from yesterday; the matching tablecloth and napkins and the new Pendleton shirt…I did them separately, too…The big news is the table cloth, 100% cotton, shrunk…I washed it in warm water as it said but I probably should have gone cold and it actually worked out because it fits the table fine now without having to fold it…Well, it’s a smidgen long on the sides, but on the ends, it looks pretty good.
Having it shrink, tho, caused me to fret that maybe the shirt would shrink, too, but that was needless worry, the shirt – wool, with the same warm water wash recommendation, came out still fitting great.
I am still in need of a haircut and pretty soon I’ll be in desperate need…Barbers are allowed to open, by appointment, tho my usual franchise place in town isn’t taking any right now…Another barbershop is but they don’t have an opening until next month and I walked past the local barbershop today and there are no signs they are open at all, tho the chick hairstylist next door had a sign up that said she was taking appointments…My hair is really curling an awful lot now and I no longer present the professional appearance I like, tho I am still some time away from getting the clippers, doing it myself and cutting it really short all around.
Growing up, Pa Sparrow gave me those lousy home haircuts up until eighth grade…I still remember the last one; he had the clippers going near an ear and then he said a couple of words I was not allowed to say and them something or other about it not showing at all in a couple of weeks…Now, the hair requirements of a Lutheran kid aren’t all that great, but even we don’t need gaping holes in our hair and I think even he realized that and, as I recall, he ended up giving me one of his patented crew cuts and then started forking over for a barber.
The walk was fairly late today, about 1300 (see Sleep Log below) tho I was able to get it in before the rain came…I switched it up, too…When I got to the convenience store I turned left (at the emergency signal) and headed to the fairgrounds, then up to the new middle/high school they’re building…Then I turned right on Third Street past the park and the Legion hut and then right again on Main Street which, for those of you keeping score at home, is a block north of the convenience store, then headed home…I measured it online it came out to 2.18 miles, about what I thought it would be and what I was looking to get in.
Then I showered and headed out to the next county…The retailer is still not fully stocked with the sandwich spread that has a pic of Satan on the label, tho I did get some coffee, peanut butter, jelly and some other stuff…The big news at the Mexican joint is that The Kid who usually works the counter and knows my order by heart was pulling a shift at the grill, the second time he’s cooked my meal and he does a good job.
Some good rainfall means the grass is growing pretty quickly and I’m glad I got the mowing in on Thursday…Dandelions are really starting to grow, too, and two of the big trees here at The Shire are starting to show the first green…I never know what to do about dandelions…Offhand, I define a weed as something you don’t like to look at it and the yellow really looks good against the green, so I think I am going to let them stay even tho a lot of people categorize them as weeds…Besides, they don’t stay all summer and they’ll be gone soon enuff.
In celebration of the green returning to the trees, I put away the heavy winter coat and I put the brutal cold gloves and some other dead-of-winter stuff in the area under the bench on the coat rack in the kitchen yours truly assembled a couple of weeks ago…Originally, I put the heavy winter coat in there, but it takes up a lot of space and I ended up putting it in the closet.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
1900 Friday until 0100 Saturday
0830 Saturday until 1230 Saturday
10.0 hours for the day and a ho-hum 45 hours for the week…I know all of you are noticing the extra-early Saturday nap time…Usually, of course, it runs from late afternoon/early evening until it’s time to leave for the hotel, but today it was different…I was on the couch reading and starting to nod off and I thought screw it let’s go lay down, a prospect extra-enticing by the Friday’s arrival of the new blanket…The nap went great and I woke up strong and got on nicely with the rest of my day, to include a second pot of coffee…Hopefully, it will set up a good day’s sleep Sunday, which regular readers of this crap know hasn’t happened in a while.
The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
