The Diary of a Nobody/April 5

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Sunday, April 5
Busy tonight…Well, relatively busy considering the circumstances…There were no less than three sundry stand purchases, featuring strong Hot Pocket action, and then a guy about my age wandered in wondering where he could get a pack of smokes.

Crap, nowhere now…Both 24-hour convenience stores – the one near the retailer and the one across town – no longer offer 24/7 service…The one near the retailer long ago stopped being able to find people to work graveyard, while the one across town has adjusted their hours for the time being….I was obliged to the tell the gent there was nowhere for him to buy cigarettes right now, something he was not particularly enthused about hearing…He said he had smokes but he couldn’t find “the buggers”…I felt for him…I don’t smoke myself – sneaking some of Pa Sparrow’s Lucky Strikes when I was a boy cured me of that real quick – but I can remember on the submarine I was on people needing a tobacco fix…You could still smoke at sea in those days tho sometimes you had to wait your turn and sometimes it wasn’t easy.

It’s starting to warm up and summer pants made their debut tonight and I rolled with the green carpenter pants because they were at the top of the stack in the drawer…(There’s also a pair of jeans and two pairs of khaki work pants.)…I am pleased to report they still fit like they did last year…This is hardly a bulletin, of course, because they’re the same size as the winter pants which fit goof, but it’s a good feeling nonetheless…I’m keeping the lined winter pants out, just in case, tho…I tend not to put them away until we have a week of forecasted lows above freezing and we don’t have that just yet, and I’m a wimp of course, but I doubt they’ll be used again.

I also broke out the old, plaid wool jacket for the first time since fall…We’ve been together 35 years – it was a present from the folks when I was in the Navy – and the two slashed, unzippered side pockets and the two buttoned, not-particularly-deep chest pockets – are reminiscent of a bygone era in pockets but it is still a fine jacket.

Times are tuff up here, of course, and they’re tuff enuff that the local paper is now soliciting donations…I was reading it this morning and clicked on the hard-hitting story of Chuck retiring from the town’s post office after 26 years and BOOM there was the plea…Business is down for them, too, with advertising so low now that they’ve ceased the printed Sunday edition.

The big news I didn’t walk today…While I’ve generally enjoyed getting up in the early afternoon the past couple of Sundays (see Sleep Log below), I was pretty tired and not particularly in the mood for excessive movement…Plus it was windy.

I did make what has turned into my usual carrot juice, tho…I do this when I take my supplements…Actually, I don’t have a proper juicer that leaves the juice while expelling the fiber, but a product that leaves everything in…Some research showed that this is OK, your body needs most of the fiber, tho since carrots don’t have a lot of water you have to put some water in with it or else you need to eat it with a spoon.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0830 Sunday until 1330 Sunday…5.0 hours for the day and the week…I knew – knew! – that 12 hours yesterday would affect the Sunday Sleep Session (SSS)…This despite the fact I was plainly tired, as evidenced by the earlier-than-normal going to sleep time…But this is not the first time I’ve gotten up earlier than usual on Sunday and it’s rather enjoyable having the afternoon to myself so I’m not complaining…Too much.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
