Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Tuesday, September 17
My term as Immediate Past Employee of the Month here at the hotel is over…Ruth, the housekeeper who was the reigning Employee of the Month had her picture moved over to the right on the Employee of the Month picture display and she was replaced as the newest Employee of the Month by Tammy, the one who relieves me four mornings a week.
It’s well deserved…Tammy knows exactly what she is doing and is still helpful to ol’ Sparrow, tho ol’ Sparrow needs less help than he did in the past…It’s also her second Employee of the Month award since I’ve been here, so maybe they should just name the award after her. It also leaves hope that maybe yours truly may, one day, be a repeat winner.
About 0230 or so some guy calls saying he’s with someone’s tech support and wants to talk to “someone in maintenance” about “our Internet access points”…He sounded like he was reading from a script and he may well have been trying to drum up trade for someone…He didn’t have a discernible accent, but he seemed surprised when I told him maintenance wouldn’t be in for several hours.
I guess I’ll just call back later then…After 7am.
Uh, OK…Thing is, he guessed wrong…I should’ve taken action on his guess because, and I am not making this up, he called back at 0515!!!…His phone line blew, too…I sound like that teacher who yapped thru a squawk box on those old Charlie Brown cartoons, and it took several seconds to understand him…He didn’t suppose maintenance was in yet, were they???…No, I told him for the second time this morning, they probably won’t be in until after 0700…Almost interesting is the fact there were a couple of phone calls where the phone only rang a couple of times before stopping before I could answer it, so maybe it was him calling back.
(Later, Employee of the Month Tammy would say 239 was out of order because it was having Internet problems, so the calls appear to be legitimate.)
Like all the great ones, I’ve got my classic lines, of course, and this morning we had several people getting early starts to their days and checking out…It allowed me to use, several times, of my all-time fave lines – and probably one of yours, too…It’s a line I came up with – came up with, not stole – during the days at Hotels A and B:
I’d like to checkout…
Certainly…Departures are allowed today…
The great part is you can use this multiple times and it never gets old because you have a fresh audience with every checkout. There might come a time when ol’ Sparrow gets tired of it, tho that happening is subject to an awful lot of doubt.
A good workout tonight…I was rested and strong, tho I probably would have been stronger had I not eaten at the fast-food joint after the hotel…I did get most of the upped weights in, tho, all except the bench press actually.
The post-workout meal was some frozen chicken I’ve used in the past…The entire sack is 700 good calories and two things: 1), I added some BBQ sauce, just for funsies and, 2) I shared it with The Wife, who got home from her volunteer work about the same time I did…Sparrow being Sparrow, entirely too much BBQ sauce was put in, but it wasn’t completely ruined.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0900 Tuesday until 1600 Tuesday…7.0 hours for the day and 26.0 hours for the week, a robust total that is the highest Tuesday Total (TT) of the year.
Though up and rested, I stayed in bed until 1630, simply because I could…I won’t get to bed again until Wednesday evening, so I’m entitled.
The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th century British novel of the same name.
