Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Wednesday, October 23
Boy, I was humming along, all set to have the audit done by 0030 – which longtime readers of this crap know is a great time – but two things happened.
First, there were several inches of paper to shred…I usually do the shredding while the audit is running, generally some old reports I regenerated when I came on and it usually takes a minute or two…Not this morning…Good gravy, there was a lot of stuff, tho I couldn’t be bothered to look at it and see what it was…I’m as focused as I am disinterested: shred, shred, shred…Staples are a go, but you gotta keep an eye out for paperclips.
I don’t mind doing this…Yours truly is on record as believing the night audit is not a repository for crap day and swing shifts don’t want to do, but it’s not unreasonable to expect your night auditor to catch up on the shredding…There was so much I had to replace the bag in the basket twice, once shortly after starting and again at the end…It didn’t really need it at the end but, as I think I’ve noted here, the red full basket warning light isn’t working and nobody but ol’ Sparrow ever checks and its easier for everyone if I replace the bag.
The second delay came right as I was about to slide the first folio under 237’s door…The front desk mobile rings and one Mr Kim announces he is at the front desk, ready to check-in.
OK…He’s the last arrival but he actually has two reservations…Tonight’s he is paying for himself and the following two nights his employer is paying for, hardly uncommon, so he has to be checked out and checked back in…There is not, of course, any reason for him to have to come by the front desk for this…I have him sign two registration cards and make his keys good for all three nights and tell him everything’s in order and he does not have to visit the front desk again unless he wants to say howdy…Later, I actually check him out and then back in the system.
The latest on the murder, our county’s first in three-four years, is that the three suspects are being held without bond…This despite the fact the DA has yet to file charges, the judge having granted an extension…It also appears they are singing like canaries, each having already fessed up with statements detailing what happened.
Stanko from the post was in the Veteran Service Office (VSO) today…He came by to pick up the official resolution the county commissioners had for our post last week in honor of Post 44’s 100th birthday on the 15th, a landmark that went without us doing anything at all for some reason.
Stanko also talked about Veteran’s Day…There are things going on literally all day: from breakfast at the VFW to gatherings and performances honoring us vets at local schools to lunch at the senior’s home to dinner…A vice commander from the national Legion office is visiting…A national vice commander is a pretty big deal, especially for a holiday like Veteran’s Day, and Stanko asked if yours truly – in his role as district commander – could be at the dinner, which will be in the national vice commander’s honor…Sure, of course I can…I had planned to attend the morning festivities and break off around noon to go home because while I don’t have the VSO on Veterans Day I do have the hotel, but I can just as easily sleep during the day as the afternoon…Dinner is at 1830 and at 1730 I have to be someplace for a dedication of some sort, but it will all work out.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log: As usual, there is no sleep to report for Wednesday.
The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
