The blast destroyed or damaged over 300 other buildings and did an estimated $652 million in damage, about $1.3 billion in today’s dollars. Of the dead, 19 were children under the age of six. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were later arrested, tried, and convicted of the bombing, with McVeigh executed in 2001, while Nichols remains in prison. Alfred P Murrah was a federal judge from Oklahoma.
In 1897 – James McDermott of the US wins the first Boston Marathon in a time of 2 hours, 55 minutes, 10 seconds. It remains the oldest annual marathon in the world, and the 2025 Boston Marathon takes place on Monday.
In 1969 – Glen Campbell is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the first of three consecutive weeks with Galveston. The song also went #1 country in Canada, peaked at #14 in Great Britain, and at #4 on the Hot 100.
