In 1945 – Harry Truman becomes president of the United States following the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who died in Warm Springs, Georgia. Truman had been vice president for 82 days and just finished presiding over the Senate when he was summoned to the White House. Roosevelt was first elected in 1932 and is the only president to serve more than two terms.

In 1965 – The Houston Astrodome – the first multi-purpose domed stadium –  hosts its first regular season baseball game, a 2-0 Astros loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. An early problem was the clear, plastic roof, which made it tough to see fly balls, and when that was painted over, the grass died, necessitating the invention and installation of Astroturf the following season. The stadium also hosted Houston Oilers football through 1996 and the Bluebonnet Bowl from 1968-84 and in 1987. The Astros moved out after the 1999 season and had a 1,564-1,210 regular season record in the Astrodome.

In 1969 – The 5th Dimension is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of six consecutive weeks with Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #11 in Great Britain, at #6 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was their 2nd-biggest song of the year. It was the eighth of 20 Top 40 hits for the group, their third of seven Top 10 songs  and their first of two #1s. The song is a medley of two songs from the musical Hair.
