THE LATEST FROM THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIK OF AMERICA: Initially, the start of Donald Trump’s second term was harmless enough: some blather about annexing Canada and Greenland, playing tariffs/no tariffs with the rest of the world, and deporting people who had every legal right to be in our country. It was par for the Trump course and surprised nobody because Trump’s stock-in trade is ignorance, bullying, and blather.
Dry, Technical Matter: Push, however, has come to shove in America: the president of the United States is ignoring court orders to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the US from El Salvador, where he was illegally deported.
Wait, There’s More: It gets worse, with President Trump now talking about deporting US citizens he disapproves of to other countries. Good gravy, this is as petty and vindictive as it is illegal and immoral, and should have every thinking American up in arms. This is not what this country is about.
Let’s Get Our History Books Out, Shall We? Friends, this is a seminal moment in American history. Are we going to say yes to a president’s blustering and bullying, his ignoring the courts, and what is essentially a functional dictatorship, or are we going to say no? What’s next? Calling off the 2026 midterm elections?
The Bottom Line: This is insane, a nightmare where America elected an ignorant, lying, admitted sexual predator, a convicted felon, a man of zero moral or intellectual substance again! None of this idiocy is a surprise: his first term was a clinic in incompetence, with Trump still having blood on his hands for an almost criminal COVID response, and his second term may well bring the American experiment to its knees. We’re not there yet, but boy oh boy, Donald Trump is measuring America to see which types of chains will fit best.

In 1938 – Superman, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, debuts in the US comic book Action Comics #1. Superman first appeared as a villain and a homeless man in a 1933 short story, with Siegel and Shuster trying to sell Superman in a variety of contexts before signing with Detective Comics. Lois Lane also appeared in this issue and Action Comics #1 is the most valuable comic book in the world, remaining the only comic book to sell for at least $3 million.
In 1942 – The Toronto Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 in game seven in Toronto. It was the fourth of 13 Stanley Cup titles for Toronto and the third of 13 runner-up finishes for the Red Wings, to go along with eleven titles. The Maple Leafs became the first team in North American professional sports to erase a 3 games to zero deficit. The feat has been duplicated since in both the NHL and major league baseball, though the Maple Leafs remain the only team to do it in a finals series.
In 1960 – The soundtrack to the Broadway play The Sound of Music is at #1 on Billboard’s Mono Action album chart for the eleventh of twelve consecutive weeks and at #1 on the Stereo Action album chart for the 13th of 15 non-consecutive weeks. Between 1965-67, the movie soundtrack also went to #1 and spent 109 weeks in the Top 10, still good for third in Billboard album chart history.
