Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 715 – Pope Gregory II is elected, following the death of Constantine in April. Born Gregorius Sabellous in Rome, had been head Vatican Library and served as secretary of state under Constantine. History primarily remembers Gregory for his defiance of Byzantine emperor Leo III, which lead to secular and politcal authority and power for the papacy.

In 2013 – Sweden wins the world ice hockey championship, defeating Switzerland 5-1 in the gold medal game in Stockholm. It was the ninth of eleven world championships for Sweden and the second of three runner-up finishes for Switzerland, to go along with four relegation-level world titles. The US finished third, defeating Finland 3-2 in the bronze medal game.

In 1973 – The Independents are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the only week with Leaving Me. It was the fourth of eight should hits for the group, their second of four Top 10s and remains their only appearance at #1 on a Billboard chart. The song also peaked at #21 on the Hot 100, their only pop hit. The song spent seven weeks in the Top 10 and 13 weeks on the soul chart, which back then had 50 positions.
