In 1948 – The Soviet Union, in charge of East Berlin, blockades Allied access to West Berlin. The Soviets blocaded Allied rail, road, and water access to West Berlin, with the Allies beginning the Berlin Air Lift two days later. The Soviets, though surprised at the airlift’s success, did not disrupt the airlift and would end the blockade the following May, though the airlift continued until September 1949, out of fears it would be reinstated.
In 1995 – The New Jersey Devils win the Stanley Cup, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 to win the series in four games. It was the first of three Stanley Cup titles for the Devils and the 12th of 13 runner-up finishes for the Red Wings, to go along with 13 titles. The win was an upset, with the Devils holding the 5th seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Red Wings, at 33-11-4, and had the best record in the NHL in the lockout-shortened season. To date, the Devils were the lowest seed to win the Stanley Cup.
