The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow reports there are new toothbrushes at the hotel. Today’s Diary.

They’re quality, name-brand brushes, the kind you’d pay a few bucks for at the store and we’re giving them away for nothing…They replace those cheap, nameless ones we got from a company that deals in cheap hotel amenities, the type that fall apart after the first brushing…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1776 – A United States flag is hoisted for the first time, by General George Washington at Prospect Hill in Somerville, Massachusetts. The flag featured 13 alternating red and white stripes with a Union Jack in the canton. Known as the Grand Union Flag, it had flown occasionally in the Colonies before Independence had been declared the previous July 2. History neglected to record who designed the Grand Union Flag.

In 1919 – The Great Lakes Navy Bluejackets defeat the Mare Island Marines 17-0 in the 5th Rose Bowl at Tournament Park in Pasadena. The MVP of the game was George Halas of Great Lakes, who would later play in the major leagues and NFL, and who would later own the Chicago Bears. It was the second and final year military teams played in the Rose Bowl due to college team being depleted because of World War I. The year before Mare Island and defeated the Army’s Camp Lewis 19-7 and Tournament Park is now an athletic field at Caltech.

In 1972 – Charley Pride is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the fifth and final consecutive week with Kiss An Angel Good Morning. It was the 15th of 50 Top country hits for Pride and was his 8th of 30 #1s. The song also went #1 country in Canada and would later peak at #21 on the Hot 100, his biggest pop hit.
