Extra, extra, read all about it.
In 1994 – The MS Estonia, carrying 989 people and en route from Estonia to Sweden via the Baltic Sea, sinks about halfway into its voyage. The Estonia was moving at approximately 14 knots and was listing to starboard slightly in heavy seas, when the bow cargo door separated from the ship, causing flooding. 852 people died, most of them Swedish, and the disaster remains the third-deadliest peacetime sinking of a European ship, behind the RMS Titanic and the RMS Empress of Ireland.
In 1976 – Muhammad Ali retains his WBC and WBA heavyweight titles with a unanimous decision win over Ken Norton at Yankee Stadium in New York City. It was the eighth defense for Ali since winning the title, for the second time, from George Foreman in 1974 and he would lose the title to Leon Spinks in 1978. Norton was awarded the WBC title in 1978, losing it in his first title defense to Larry Holmes. Ali’s win was controversial, with Ali expressing surprise he had won and Norton claiming he was robbed.
In 1968 – Jeannie C. Riley is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the first of three consecutive weeks with Harper Valley P.T.A. The song also went #1 country and pop in Canada, peaked at #12 in Great Britain, and earlier had spent a week at #1 on the Hot 100. It was the first chart single for Riley, remains her only #1 country and pop hit, and earned her the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. The song was written by Tom T. Hall.
Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.
In our desire to have government become our benefactor and sustainer, we have allowed it to become our taskmaster and overlord. As a result, we have become little more than well-fed, well-entertained slaves to the state. Freedom, as envisioned by our forefathers, is gone.
