The problem with the retailer’s house brand clothes is there is always something wrong with them, and so it was with the otherwise green/black flannel shirt we paid $14 for: the sleeves were entirely too long: with the cuff buttoned it hung halfway down our hand, making us look like an orphan…

In 1995 – The discovery of the first planet orbiting another star is announced. The planet is known as 51 Pegasi b and was discovered by two Swiss astronomers at the University of Geneva. The discovery was confirmed a week later by a team in California and the planet is located about 50 light-years away in the constellation Pegasus, which can be seen between latitudes 60 degrees south and the North Pole. 51 Pegasi b is very close to its star and its year is about four days long. I is thought to be bigger than Jupiter and is tidally locked to its star, meaning the same side always faces it, like the moon does to Earth.
In 1996 – Nick Lowery of the New York Jets ties the NFL record for most career field goals in a 34-13 loss to the Oakland Raiders. Lowery had two field goals, including one from 24-yards in the third quarter, to tie the record of 373 established by Jan Stenerud from 1967-85. Lowery would break the record the following week and retired at the end of the season with 383 field goals. The record is now 599, done by Adam Vinatieri from 1996-2019.
In 1979 – Robert John is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Sad Eyes. It was the fourth of ten chart singles for John, his second and final Top 10 hit, and remains his only #1 song. The song also peaked at #3 in Great Britain and was Billboard’s 10th-biggest song of the year. John’s first appearance on the Hot 100 came in 1958 when, under his real name Bobby Pedrick, Jr and then twelve years old, White Bucks and Saddle Shoes peaked at #74.
