In 1953 – The Piltdown Man Skull – one thought to be a significant archelogical discovery – is declared a hoax by the Natural History Museum in London. The skull was found in 1912 about 40 miles south of London and was presented as the remains of a previously unknown early human from approximately 500,000 years. There was some suspicion from the start, with later testing showing the skull had, among other things, the teeth of an orangutan and the cranium of a human.
In 1971 – The New York Rangers tie the NHL record for most goals in a period in an 11-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Bruins had eight goals in the second period, to tie the mark established in March 1922 by the Montreal Canadiens, and the record was tied in January 1944 by the Detroit Red Wings and in March 1969 by the Boston Bruins and would later be tied by the Philadelphia Flyers and the Buffalo Sabres. The record is now held by the Sabres, who had nine goals in the second period of a March 1981 game.
In 1970 – The Partridge Family is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with I Think I Love You. The song featured David Cassidy on lead vocals and his stepmother Shirly Jones singing background. The song also went to #1 in Canada and Australia, peaked at #18 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s sixth-biggest song of the year. It was the first of seven Top 40 hits for the group and remains their only #1 song. Cassidy also had six Top 40 hits on his own and while there were other members of the Partridge family on their TV show, Cassidy and Jones are the only members to play on the record.
