In 1774 – The First Continental Congress takes action on what History refers to as the Intolerable Acts, acts passed by Parliament in retribution for the Boston Tea Party the previous December. Among other things, the Congress declared that “all statutes for taxing…the colonies are illegal and void” and the Intolerable Acts were a major contributor to the Revolution which began the following April.
In 1972 – Gene Tenace of the Oakland Athletics becomes the first player to hit a home run in his first two World Series at-bats in a 3-2 Athletics win over the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1. Tenace homered in the second and fifth innings and accounted for all three Oakland runs and would finish the series with four home runs, nine RBIs, a .358 average, and was named the series MVP. Oakland would win the series in seven games
In 1984 – Ricky Skaggs is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with Uncle Pen. It was the tenth of 19 Top 10 country hits for Skaggs and his eighth of eleven #1 country songs. The song also went #1 country in Canada, and in 1956 a version by Porter Waggoner peaked at #14 on Billboard’s country chart. The song was written by Bill Monroe who based it on his musical mentor, his uncle Pendelton Vandiver
