History’s long march.

In 401 – Innocent I assumes the papacy, succeeding his father Anastasius I, who had died a couple of days earlier, the only known instance of a son succeeding his father as pope. Innocent I served for 16 years and, among other things, is remembered for determining which books became parts of the sacred Catholic canon. Innocent has been the name of twelve other popes over the centuries, the last being Pope Innocent XIII from 1721-24.

In 1894 – The United States Golf Association (USGA) – then known as the Amateur Golf Association of the United States – forms in New York City, as a way to consolidate the two US amateur championships that were being conducted. The USGA would hold its first tournaments, the US Amateur and the US Open, the following year in Newport, Rhode Island and today the USGA conducts 14 championships, four professional and ten for amateurs.

In 1984 – Madonna is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of six consecutive weeks with Like a Virgin. It was the fourth of 49 Top 40 hits for Madonna, her third of 38 Top 10 hits and was her first of twelve #1 songs. The song went to #1 in three other countries, peaked at #3 in Great Britain, at #9 on Billboard’s soul chart and was their second-biggest song of 1985. Madonna’s 38 Top 10 hits are second behind on the all-time Hot 100 list behind Drake’s 54.
