On This Date
The long march to today.

In 1883 – Time zones come to North America as Canadian and American railways adopt five time zones, incorporating a system where time zones bordered on major cities. Previously, individual railroads had kept their own time, usually the time kept at its headquarters or major depot. Congress would not start regulating time for 35 years, until the passage of the Standard Time Act of 1918.

In 1979 – Richard Petty wins the NASCAR Winston Cup Series title after a 5th-place finish at the Los Angeles Times 500 at the Ontario Motor Speedway. Petty won the title by eleven points over Darrell Waltrip and the race marked the first time in NASCAR history the points lead had changed hands in the final race. It was the seventh and final NASCAR title for Petty, a NASCAR record now shared with Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson.

In 1967 – Sam and Dave are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Rhythm & Blues Singles chart – for the sixth of seven consecutive weeks with Soul Man. It was the sixth of seven Top 10 soul hits for the duo and their second and final #1 song. The song was also in its third week at #2 on the Hot 100 and in 1979 a version by the Blues Brothers peaked at #14 on the Hot 100. The song was written by longtime songwriting partners Issac Hayes and David Porter.
