Writing worth reading. Usually.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow reports there’s a new bike lane painted in front of The Shire. Today’s Diary.

It’s a bike lane, too, which is sort of redundant because bike riders are all over the place here, so much so that anything paved but an Interstate is pretty much one big bike lane and if you’re towing a dog along with you, oh brother, you’re a saint, all but seated at the right hand of the Father.

On This Date
The long march to today.

In 30 BC – Forces led by Mark Antony win a small victory over Octavian in the Battle of Alexandria (Egypt), part of the Last War of the Roman Republic. The victory was so inspiring most of his troops deserted and Antony committed suicide the following day in the mistaken belief his queen, Cleopatra, had already done so. He died in her arms and Cleopatra, after several attempts, killed herself a couple of weeks later. The deaths left Octavian as sole ruler of Rome.

In 2012 – Michael Phelps of the United States establishes a new record for most career medals won at the Olympics at the London Summer Games. Phelps’ gold medal as part of the 4×200 meter relay team was his 19th Olympic medal, breaking the record of 18 established by Larissa Latynina of the Soviet Union between 1956-64. Phelps retired after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games with 28 total medals.

In 1982 – Jennifer Holliday is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Black Singles chart – for the second of four consecutive weeks with And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going. It was the first of eight Top 40 soul hits for Holliday and remains her only #1 song. The song also peaked at #22 on the Hot 100, at #32 in Great Britain and earned her the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Holliday performed the song in the Broadway production Dreamgirls, a role which earned her the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1982.

Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.

His assets reliably compounding, his philosophy rendering him deaf to the appeals of humanity, he plowed through any contradiction.
