Read Free Fortnight (RFF) rolls on…
Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Monday, October 12
Rather slow tonight and for one of the few times this month not sold out…I did have a 0100 check-in, a girl who had called and asked about a room about midnight or so…She was loud in person as she’d been on the phone, too…When she was in lobby I half wanted to tell her to pipe down and on the phone the only reason to keep the handset anywhere near my face was to transmit my own voice.
Before I clocked in, Assistant Front Desk Manager Q advised there was a new form to fill out when issuing a half-off breakfast voucher and that he would have instructions for me on how to fill it out…Christ, I thought, how complicated did they make it???…Recall yesterday we had to write down the guest’s name and room number, plus the dates of their stay, the number of vouchers issued plus their blood type…This one was really easy, tho, all you have to do is initial in the space next to their room number and Q actually had instructions for me on how to do that!!!…I am not making that up…He pointed to the form, ran a finger over some room numbers and then pointed out the boxes for the initials…I’m surprised he didn’t show me how to use a pen, too…It was pretty funny.
Here are the current reward club enrollment standings:
Q: 25
Front Desk Manager Brandon: 12
Amy 8.
Q and Amy both worked swing shift before I got there and Q reported he named the score, picking up seven enrollments to Amy’s paltry five…I wouldn’t count Amy out, tho…She missed a few shifts last week and she’s on record as coveting the monthly title and both Q and Brandon she is utterly relentless in her pursuit of reward club memberships because, recall, we get 500 reward club bonus points of our own for each signup…I have zero reward club bonus points.
For the first time in quite a while, the left coffee pot was the first one replaced at Morning Coffee Service (MCS)…Now, specific records aren’t kept – I don’t know why they aren’t kept, knife usage is logged here for Pete’s sake – but it’s been a while…It worked out splendidly, too, as the left pot had enough left to refill the right pot…I’m still not entirely sure if this is in step with either company policy or established county health and safety standards but, on the other hand, I don’t know that they’re not, either.
There was a message from Jim M when I got to the Veterans Service Office (VSO)…Recall we’ve been helping him with a claim that includes assorted medical records the VA will need to make a ruling…We filed two forms allowing the VA to get the records themselves but they haven’t been able to get them…OK, Jim and his good wife set about getting them themselves…Two were in town and easy, the other records tho, were in New Mexico…Jim had called asking for the records, the office sent him a form and he sent it back but it’s the Virus Era and a lot of people were working from home and his request was ignored…He was not happy…I told him to call them today and see what the deal was…He hemmed and hawed and whined a bit – and his habit of interrupting me prolonged matters – before saying he’d call New Mexico this morning…He called back later to say they office had admitted they hadn’t acted on his letter, tho they had received it, and they’d get right on it…Jim then made an appointment for Wednesday, when we’ll send the VA a statement saying we’re still working on the records…They want them by Friday, but they’re pretty reasonable so perhaps they’ll hold off making a decision.
Jim M came up later in the shift, too, when I was talking with Ed, the VSO in the next county and my senior vice commander at Legion District 14…He had called to report someone had told the county commissioners over there that he had blown off trying to help him and he asked me if I had helped anyone from the next county lately.
No, I hadn’t and no I wouldn’t, either, not without finding out why he didn’t go to Ed first…I thought about it and remembered Jim M, who lives in yet another county, came to me after going to the teleclinic in the next county and I seem to recall saying something or other about Ed but it may well have been he was out of the office…Anyway, I told Ed he didn’t even live in the next county, so it’s no big deal and he agreed.
I’m feeling a lot better…The constant snot production ended at the hotel and now all I have is an occasional cough and I’m hoping I’ll be strong enuff for a workout and a walk Tuesday evening.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1500 Monday until 2130 Monday…6.5 hours for the day and 13.5 hours for the week, a pretty good total.
The big news is I slept straight thru again, the first consecutive nights not waking up to use the can since time immemorial…I’d rather eat at the fast-food joint, of course, but you can’t argue with the results from eating raw veggies the past few days.
The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
