A ranking of some things.

1. Donald Trump – Still a lying sexual predator who believes the moon is part of Mars, but lately showing his age, turning into even more of a babbling, incoherent blatherskite than usual…A convicted felon, as lousy a human being as we can produce (Non-Dictator Division), a three (3)-time GOP presidential nominee, Trump shows exactly how far America has fallen in the 70 years since TV became the focal point of American life…We are as ignorant as he is.  

2. Kamala Harris – A typical Democrat who believes government can be all things to all people,  but she isn’t Donald Trump, giving her a leg up on Donald Trump…First presidential candidate some Americans are lusting after since Victoria Woodhull in 1872. 

3. USA! USA! – The 3-hole staple…A hundred years from now all new people – perhaps Americans, if there are any left – will look back at the Donald Trump Era and conclude that America tolerated the three-time nomination of a man of zero moral and intellectual substance because America herself was no longer a nation of any moral or intellectual substance.  

4. College Football – Only two (2) conferences that matter – Big 18 and SEC – meeting to decide how best to consolidate wealth and power by forcing a super league down everyone’s throats…All major division college sports a house of cards now, with everyone – conferences, universities, coaches, players, and networks – all in it to strafe marketplace for every last possible dollar…It can’t possibly last.

In 1792 – The cornerstone of the White House is laid in Washington D.C. Construction would take over eight years, with President John Adams and his family moving into what was then known as the Executive Mansion in November 1800, when the capital moved from Philadelphia to Washington. Later, the sandstone used to construct the mansion was whitewashed, giving the building its eventual name. 

In 1903 – The Boston Americans, now the Red Sox, win the first World Series, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 games to 3 with a 5-3 win in Game 8 in Boston. It was the first of nine World Series titles for the Red Sox and the first of four runner-up finishes for the Pirates to go along with four titles. The World Series would revert to a best-of-seven format from 1905-18, with the final best-of-nine series being played from 1919-21. 

In 1979 – Michael Jackson is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough. It was the sixth of 40 Top 40 solo hits for Jackson, his fourth of 30 Top 10s, and his second of 13 #1s. The song went to #1 in six other countries, including Australia and Norway, peaked at #3 in Great Britain, was Billboard’s 93rd-biggest song of the 1979 survey period, and earlier had spent five weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart.

In 2000 – The destroyer USS Cole is attacked by two al-Qaeda suicide bombers during a refueling stop in Yemen. 17 sailors were killed 37 were injured, the deadliest attack on a US Navy ship since an attack on the USS Stark killed 37 in 1987. The US did not retaliate and the Cole was transported by barge to the US, where it was repaired and it remains in commissioned naval service today. 

In 1986 – The Boston Red Sox defeat the California Angels 7-6 in eleven innings in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. The Red Sox had trailed 6-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Angels were a strike away from winning the pennant when Dave Henderson’s two-run home run gave the Red Sox a 6-5 lead and the Angels tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. The Angeles still led the series 3 games to 2, though the Red Sox would win the American League pennant in seven games. They lost the World Series in seven games to the New York Mets. 

In 2013 – Lorde is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of nine consecutive weeks with Royals. It was the first of four Top 40 and Top 10 hits for Lorde and remains her only #1 song. The song also went to #1 in four other countries, including Great Britain and her native New Zealand, and was Billboard’s 15th-biggest song of the year. The song also won 2014 Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

In 1910 – Former President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt becomes the first president to fly in an airplane at Kinloch Field in St Louis. Roosevelt had been invited to attend an air show that included the Wright Brothers, who had invented air travel in 1903. Roosevelt’s plane was piloted by Archibald Hoxsey, an instructor at a Wright Brother’s flying school who had become the first pilot to fly at night. Kinloch Field became St Louis International Airport in 1971. 

In 1902 – Laurie Auchterlonie of Scotland wins the US Open, establishing a new 72-hole scoring record at the Garden City Golf Club on Long Island, New York. Auchterlonie shot a final round 77 to beat Steward Gardner and Walter Travis by six strokes. It remains Auchterlonie’s only major victory and his 72-hole total of 307 broke the record of 313 established by Henry Vardon in 1900. The record is now 268 by Rory McElroy in 2011. 

In 1975 – Neil Sedaka is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Bad Blood. It was the 17th of 21 Top 40 hits for Sedaka, his eighth and final Top 10 hit, and his third and final #1. The song also went to #1 in Canada, and due to charting in both the 1975 and 1976 survey periods, it was Billboard’s 93rd-biggest song of 1975. Elton John sang backup vocals on the song, though he did not receive label credit.

HUT, HUT, HIKE: The news didn’t seem entirely believable at first: that Army and Navy could play football twice this season, and in consecutive weeks no less. 

We Are Not Making This Up: It’s true, though. Both are in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) now with both teams undefeated and if this nonsense keeps up, they will meet in the AAC championship game, scheduled for December 6 at the home of the highest-seeded team. The following week, the regularly scheduled Army/Navy game – a non-conference affair – will be played in Landover, Maryland. 

FunFact: If Army and Navy do make it to the title game, it will only be the seventh time the game has been played on campus: the first four were, and each hosted a game during World War II.

Oh, Jesus H: Most times the game is played in Philadelphia, but it has also been played all along the eastern seaboard, not to mention Chicago and even the Rose Bowl. 

Dry, Technical Matter: Navy, of course, leads the series 59-55-7. The teams first met in 1891 – Army’s first game ever – and cheated their way to a 32-16 win. Navy is so good, they once won 14 straight. 

The Bottom Line: In a season where Washington and Rutgers played a conference game and where Vanderbilt defeated Alabama, anything can happen, so we’ll keep rooting like the Dickens for this to happen. If it does Navy, of course, will destroy Army both times and probably use the momentum as a propellant for a run to the CFP national championship..

In 1973 – Vice President Spiro Agnew resigns after being charged with federal income tax evasion. The charges stemmed from kickbacks Agnew had received while a county official in Maryland and later as governor. He was the second vice president to resign, following John Calhoun in 1832, who left so he could accept a US Senate seat from South Carolina. Gerald Ford would later replace Agnew and Agnew died in 1996 at age 77. 

In 1964 – The Tokyo Summer Olympics open, with 5,137 athletes from 93 nations participating. Tokyo had been awarded the 1940 Summer Olympics, but they were taken away after their invasion of China. The Games also marked the first time South Africa was excluded for declining to send a multi-racial team, with South Africa not returning to the Olympics until the 1992 Barcelona Games. They were the first Olympics televised via satellite. 

In 1960 – Larry Verne is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Mr Custer. The song also peaked at #9 on Billboard’s soul chart, was Billboard’s 42nd-biggest song of the year, and was the first of two chart singles for Verne and remains his only Top 40 hit. The song spent 13 weeks on the chart, seven of them in the Top 10, including three consecutive weeks at #4. Later in the year, a version by Charlie Drake peaked at #12 in Great Britain.

ENTER YOUR OWN CATCHY LEAD LINE HERE: Earlier this week, we did one of our patented Capsule Reviews on The Sopranos, the show from earlier this century about a mob family in northern New Jersey. We thought it was as good a show as TV has produced. 

Up Next On Most Of These NBC Stations: We have some idle hours in our life right now so, feeling warm and fuzzy toward the mob, we started in on Tulsa King. Sylvester Stallone plays a New York mobster released from a 25-year stint in the joint and, immediately upon his return, is dispatched to Tulsa, apparently to oversee his family’s expansion project. 

Capsule Capsule Review: Everything about this show is good. Sly has become a friend over the years and it’s good to make his acquaintance again. But nothing about Tulsa King is great. This is apparent, sometimes painfully, immediately after seeing every episode of The Sopranos. 

Live, You Are There Coverage: As we noted in our review, in The Sopranos, it’s as if the Goomba Network deployed cameras and followed real mobsters on their rounds. In Tulsa King, you are obviously watching actors play roles. This is not an indictment: this is what actors do, they play roles. 

Oh Hell, Here We Go: But it got us thinking about why some things are good and some things are great, because the difference between good and great isn’t very much. 

Dry, Technical Matter: Former Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne thought the difference was only three percent and our experience sports officiating showed something similar. The difference between champion and runner-up was seldom more than that, and the difference between the best high school officials and the merely good high school officials wasn’t all that great, either. The difference usually involved hard work. 

The Bottom Line: We’re not entirely sure why some achieve greatness and some merely do good. As one of our pen names is fond of saying, though, you do not summit Everest by wandering around the Gobi Desert. No one every achieved greatness by accident. You have to want it.

…the guy reported even more gibberish: it was a system peripherals alarm, zone 647, which seems like a lot zones for a 117-room hotel…This alarm was “not restored”, tho the simultaneous kitchen hood alarm had been restored.

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 7 – It’s the tightest race for The Dan Henning Trophy ever. 

Owner Genghis Khan resumes threats to kidnap coaching staff families as first win of 2024 knocks Jaguars not only off B-10 top spot, but off medal stand, too…

Rams out-rush and out-pass Packers, but establish strong B-10 credentials by giving up 14 points off of consecutive 2nd-half turnovers…

With team dangerously close to challenging for AFC East lead, owner fires head coach in desperate attempt to get Jets back on solid B-10 footing…

In 1995 – The Amtrak Sunset Limited, service from New Orleans to Los Angeles, is derailed on a bridge over a dry riverbed in western Arizona. Notes were found at the scene linking the derailment to a group displeased with the government’s handling of the 1993 siege in Waco, Texas. One person was killed and 78 were injured and the saboteurs were never identified, much less found. 

In 1934 – The St Louis Cardinals win the World Series, defeating the Detroit Tigers 11-0 in the seventh game at Navin Field in Detroit. It was third of eleven World Series titles for the Cardinals and the fourth of seven losses for the Tigers to go with four championships. The score remains the highest shutout win in a World Series seventh game, a mark tied in 1985 by the Kansas City Royals. History refers to the 1934 Cardinals as the Gas House Gang.

In 2010 – Bruno Mars is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of four consecutive weeks with Just the Way You Are. It was the first chart single for Mars and his first of 22 Top 40 hits, 17 Top 10 hits, and seven #1s. The song also went to #1 in ten other countries, including Venezuela, Israel, and Great Britain, was Billboard’s 18th-biggest song of 2010 and 15th-biggest song of 2011, and their 22nd-biggest song of the decade.
