OH JESUS H…HERE WE GO AGAIN: Tuesday in our famous On This Date segment we noted how the musical act M was the fifth of 14 acts in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 who are ultimate one-hit wonders: acts whose only chart single went to #1.
Yeah, Gaylon, You’re Wonderful, Thanks: It was a pretty good piece of research – not to mention splendid chart trivia – the type of crap regular readers have come to expect, know and love. Or at least tolerate.
Dry, Technical Matter: The 14 acts run the gamut of the Hot 100, from its third #1 song by the Elegants in 1958 to the 1,111th #1 song by Jawsh 685 (along with Jason Derulo and BTS) last month.
More Dry, Technical Matter: Now, these acts may have hits in other countries or on other Billboard charts, and some may hit the Hot 100 again and earn their way off this list, but all of them have only had one Hot 100 appearance and that went to #1.
Fly In The Ointment: Even with this specificity, there was controversy.
Please Pass The Dry, Technical Matter: Some barely didn’t make it. Vangelis’ only solo hit – Chariots of Fire – went to #1 in 1982 but he also had two chart appearances as part of Jon and Vangelis, with Jon Anderson, the lead singer of Yes, so he’s out. Sheriff almost made it, too. Their only hit song When I’m With You went to #1 in 1988, however, it had also hit #61 in 1983 and that’s multiple chart appearances, so they’re out, too.
Oh, Jesus H: The Hollywood Argyles, though are in. They’re only hit Alley Oop went to #1 in 1960 and their lead singer was Gary Paxton, who was also charting at the time as part of the duo Skip and Flip. The Hollywood Argyles, though, had others that played on the record, so the group is entitled to a place on the list. If it had been a Paxton solo project, he would have been left off.
The Bottom Line: For the record, here is the list chronologically: the Elegants,
the Hollywood Argyles, the Singing Nun, Zager & Evans, M, Jan Hammer, Bobby McFerrin, The Heights, Crazy Town, Daniel Powter, Baauer, Magic, Omi and Jawsh 685. We are so down with what time it is on the street it may not be a bulletin to find out we hadn’t heard of anyone after Bobby McFerrin.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow’s French fries do not come out extra crispy like he requested.
I’ll be honest, ol’ Sparrow is only 50/50 on whining about this and today I chose to keep my yap shut about it…Officially, I’m whining the kid waiting on me didn’t come to ask how my meal was until after I was done, but I could have summoned him over…Besides, the regular fries are pretty good.

The long march to today.
In 1862 – President Abraham Lincoln removes General George McClellan as commander of the Army of the Potomac, replaced by Major General Ambrose Burnside, McClellan was brilliant at organizing an army, but didn’t fight enough to suit President Lincoln and in March, McClellan had been removed as commanding general of the United States Army. McClellan was the Democratic nominee for president in 1864, losing handily to Lincoln, and later served as governor of New Jersey.
In 1994 – George Foreman becomes the oldest heavyweight champion in history, defeating Michael Moorer for the WBA and IBF titles in Las Vegas. Foreman, 45, won by a knockout at 2:43 of the tenth of twelve rounds breaking the record previously held by Jersey Joe Walcott, who was 37 when won the title in 1951. Foreman would later add the WBU title and would lose all three in a majority decision to Shannon Briggs in 1997. Foreman had previously been heavyweight champion from 1973-74.
In 1983 – Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton are at #1 on Billboard’s country chart for the second and final consecutive week with Islands in the Stream. The song also went to #1 in Canada, Austria and Australia, peaked at #7 in Great Britain and was also in its second and final week at #1 on Billboard’s country chart. It was the second and final #1 song on the Hot 100 for both Rogers and Parton and their 12th and 13th #1 country hits respectively. The song was written by the Bee Gees.

The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.
The day I got into it is the day I never stopped…You have to get to know yourself on so many different levels because you get humbled every day…The more people start recognizing me, the more I need to stay true to myself because that’s the only thing that’s gotten me here.
