Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Sunday, July 26
Assistant Front Desk Manager Devani had a juicy tidbit for me when I reported for duty: something the hotel did or did not do has affected the unemployment they were supposed to receive during lockdown when they all lost hours…She said it has affected both her and Tammy and Tammy is really peeved about it and has threatened to give notice.
Now, I didn’t completely understand everything, and perhaps Devani didn’t either, and you know how us masses can get in these circumstances and the years teach you to get all sides of a story so who the hell knows what the deal is…Devani did say, tho, that a guest offered Tammy a job in robotics…That was surprising because I didn’t know Tammy had experience in robotics – it’s not something you’d generally associate with her, or anyone else, for that matter – but Devani said Tammy had a lot of prior robotic experience and, in fact, had helped build an attraction at Disneyland years ago.
I don’t go looking for gossip like this so ol’ Sparrow didn’t bring it up with Tammy when she came in, but if she leaves all is lost…Exactly why she is favoring the hotel racket instead of the robotics industry with her talents isn’t clear, but Tammy knows her stuff and to hire that much experience off the street would take an extraordinary amount of luck, luck the hotel probably used up when they hired me, a reasonably-competent night auditor who shows up every night, allowing everyone not to worry.
Crap, it just hit me that Davani is leaving in three weeks, too…Having to replace both would be tuff.
The hotel continues to be a kennel…It’s unreal…We weren’t even close to being sold out tonight and there were two dozen or doggie rooms and it’s been that way for a good two weeks…I don’t know why people are traveling with their dogs…You’d think they’d be sick of them having walked them five times a day for the past four months, but no, they’re all over the place…Fortunately, none of them have been barking when I’ve been passing out folios.
I hit another deer tonight…For someone who pays good attention on the road, I sure do hit them a lot…This one came from across the road tho I got off easy and the damage was slight: only the driver-side mirror was damaged…It will have to be replaced and some preliminary research shows it would probably be best if I handled it myself and didn’t bother the insurance company with the matter.
It still amazes me how ga-ga people go over a complimentary breakfast, especially ones as average as ours…I mean, all it is is some cereal – all sugary crap – and some packaged muffins that were baked weeks ago – also containing a lot of sugar – and whatever fruit we can find and Lord knows that wasn’t picked from the orchard in the back…They even wait for it, sometimes starting their loitering in the lobby at 0620 or so…One guy asked if we had waffles and I almost had to stifle a laff…Of course, we don’t…Sure, those are common at hotels that regularly feature a free morning meal, and I told him we are only offering this because our restaurant remains closed in the morning, tho I didn’t tell him waffle set-ups are really too much work for something temporary like this…I mean, waffle batter doesn’t make itself and there are butter and syrup to store and whatnot and then if you’re going to do that you might as well throw in some sausage and scrambled eggs and the next thing you know you need a breakfast attendant and eff that noise.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1730 Sunday until 2130 Sunday…4.0 hours for the day 11.0 hours for the week.
No, I don’t know what happened, either…I was doing the usual reading in the new chair and I started yawning, more or less on schedule, and soon enuff I was nodding off so I say good night to the cat and go to bed and BOOM nothing…I lay there for an hour or so and then I give it another 30 minutes just to make sure, so I get up and resume reading and then I get the day’s project work done because I won’t get it done tonight and about 1530 I start reading again.
Regular readers of this crap know this happens from time to time, and 4.0 hours is sufficient to get you thru your day so I should be good for both the hotel and the Veterans Service Office Monday.
It would be nice, however, if these days can be predicted in advance because with some advance planning perhaps a trip to the Mexican joint in the next county could have been planned.
The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
