Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Saturday, April 25
I was overdressed for my walk this morning by at least 20 degrees…I knew that before I headed and it was plain as soon I got out in the sun, but I persevered with gloves and my warmish coat anyway…Of course, we all recall Friday’s walk in town where BOOM the weather changed just like that and there is always that possibility here, but not today, except for a modest breeze and brief cloud cover, I was overdressed the whole way.
Still tho, it was a great walk on a gorgeous day, and there was some modestly interesting stuff in the mail…First, there was a Christmas card from Jim, the realtor who represented us when we bought The Shire in 2014…There was a note inside that said “whoops” and some other kind remarks…There was a letter from the VA advising they guaranteed a portion of the loan on last month’s refinancing, which I already knew because we had closed on the refinancing last month…Also, there was a flyer from a local bank kicking it old school offering a hand blender when you opened a new checking account…There was also a ballot for next week’s election here in our small town for a property tax increase for the fire district…I still haven’t decided how I am going to vote, tho regular readers of this crap know ol’ Sparrow thinks we are taxed enuff.
All mail is being dispatched immediately…I bring a letter opener and what can be tossed at the post office is chucked and the rest is taken home, where I take care of it immediately there.
Despite the fact it’s the third decade of the 21st century, today I sent two checks – a financial instrument that debuted a couple of centuries before Christ…One was the first mortgage payment under the new refinancing, something it gave me a great deal of pleasure to do…When The Ex and I decided to part there was no guarantee I would be able to remain here, and I am pleased it worked out…The other check was for the credit card I put gas purchases for the new ride on…I do this so the debit card isn’t tied up with authorizations and it is a simple matter to pay it in full…I suppose I could have paid it online, but it had the checkbook out and the bill was right there and I have a ton of checks to use anyway.
(By the by, every time I walk past what used to be the only motel in our small town and what is now one of those all-inclusive apartment deals, I am thankful I am not living there because that is probably where I would have ended up, and at a higher rent than my new mortgage.)
I went to the next county, too…I didn’t really need anything at the retailer, and I only ended up buying a beard trimmer and a letter opener to keep at my desk, but I was looking for an excuse to go to the Mexican joint…Recall I had gone Thursday but I’d missed two weeks ago, so going twice this week evens out the two-week average…Of course, I’m now averaging two trips every three days, which I don’t I will be able to keep up.
I got some wipers for the new ride, too…I could’ve gotten those at the retailer, but I hadn’t replaced them on the new ride yet and I wanted lessons…I was smart enuff to push the square button on them and actually got the blade removed from the wiper arm, but after that, I was lost…Jim was working the counter at the auto parts store and while they only one for the driver’s side, he was able to get it working.
There were some moderately funny lines, too…When Jim announced he had a driver-side wiper, he said it was a premium one, too, and I wondered aloud if it was $100 and the old guy sitting off to the right getting a battery tested said no, it was only $99.95.
Then it turned out the guy’s battery wouldn’t take a charge so he would need a replacement…He said to make it as cheap as possible, rebuilt was ideal, which led me to wonder – again, aloud – if it was for his wife’s car, which got a pretty good laugh.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
1930 Friday until 0130 Saturday
1730 Saturday until 2130 Saturday
10.0 hours for the day and 51.0 hours for the week, the first 50-hour in, well, I’m not entirely sure because I don’t actually have the master Sleep Log here in front of me…Apologies are issued…Still, tho, a great week in the sack.
The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
