The Diary of a Nobody/April 4

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, April 4
35.281 MPG!!!

I am not making that up, the new ride continues to get first-class gas mileage…I filled up at the convenience store in town preparatory to heading to the next county and I’ll be honest, I knew…Anytime the trip odometer is over 400 miles you know you’re getting top mileage…Now, this is down about half a mile per gallon from last week, but this is of no consequence, tho I remain flummoxed why it jumped 3 MPG three weeks ago…I know you are, too.

I blew about a hundred dollars at the retailer in the next county…The big news is they had the sandwich spread that has Satan on the label in stock and I got a whopping eight cans: four of the chicken, and two each of the corned beef and their flagship deviled ham…I also splurged on some leading national brand peanut butter (creamy) not out of any fits of snobbishness but because they were out of the house brand…And speaking of the retailer’s house brand, I bought some of their donut shop knockoff coffee…I didn’t really need it, but I’ve found keeping the next can handy is good for morale…It’s kept on top of the refrigerator.

In detergent news, I’ve reverted to buying the least expensive LNB…The Ex always got Tide, but now that I’m paying the laundry freight again, I’m back to buying Gain…Detergent is one thing I refuse to buy the house brand for, and I long ago learned there is zero difference between Gain and Tide, except for a few bucks…I also got the liquid instead of the pods, tho I gotta be honest, I liked the pods.

And I bought some Kombucha, which some might recall I stopped buying when we went on lockdown as one of The Economies because it’s $3.50 a bottle…It appears I may remain employed thru this imbroglio, and I make OK dough, so I can afford it again…They sell it in boxes of six for $14, a pretty good deal, so I bought a box because the mini-mart I’d them at before reporting for duty at the hotel closes early now.

I also ran into Gabby, who I used to work with at the retailer in town…She moved to the next county for cosmetology school and works at the retailer there, now…Longtime readers of the crap may – or they may not – recall Gabby and I had an inside joke: she’d come to the service desk to see if there were any Clothing Department go-backs and I’d always stick an electronics go-back item in her bin…It was big fun, or at least it was in the context of a slow nite at the retailer, and she laffed and noted she didn’t have any inside jokes with anyone at this retailer.

By the by, a LOT of shoppers – at least half – had masks on, and they were counting those coming in and those going out at the front doors.

In an effort to keep the economy in the next county afloat, I dined at the Mexican joint…I could see no reason not to, tho this time I actually went inside and ordered before eating in my car in the mall parking lot next door.

My walk this morning completely ruled…One, it was gorgeous…A bit above freezing with clear skies and no breeze…Two, I added a half-mile to it…I am not making that up…Instead of heading straight up Main Street into town and on to the post office, I turned left on Maple Street, went down a block to South Street, then turned right…At the street the library is on I turned right, crossed Main Street and went on to North Street and turned right and then turned right again on Maple Street and headed to Main Street and those of you keeping score at home know this puts me right back at the intersection of The Shire…From there I turned right and headed back towards town and the post office…I kept a brisk pace the whole way and the new mileage was 2.5 miles, which I will try to up to three miles later this week.

There really wasn’t much in the mail…A Legion newsletter, a credit card offer and a request from the VA clinic in the next county to call them for an appointment, probably a followup to December’s physical.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
1800 Friday until 0130 Saturday
1700 Saturday until 2130 Saturday

12.0 hours for the day and 48.5 for the week, a fine total…Proof that ol’ Sparrow can, and will, whine about absolutely anything can be found in the fact I am fretting about today’s totals…I mean, obviously, I needed the sleep if that’s how long I slept, but I hope it doesn’t affect yours truly getting to sleep Sunday morning…I might have to take a shot of Zzzzz-Sleep, but if I do that I might wake up groggy and that might affect the Sunday Nite Walk (SNW).

It never ends…Sigh.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
