The Diary of a Nobody/January 16

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, January 16
After some farting around with the daily project work, I went to the gym where I was really strong…Really strong…It was my first full workout in a week or so – recall I’ve done short workouts the last couple of times – and I had unlimited time and was fully rested and stoned to the gills on my plant-based pre-workout supplement and I upped the cable shoulder machine to 80 lbs and the z-bar bicep curls had 35 lbs on each side both of which are really good for an old fart so blow me…Also, the tricep overhead ropes have been at 90 lbs for a while, but today was the first time I got them pulled ten times…I’ve been working my way up from six since I upped the weight a couple of weeks ago.

The plan today was to go into the next county and get a new phone but I was back from the gym early and had no small amount of time to kill, so I reported for duty on the couch for some reading and it worked out great, I finished my book, Vol. 1 of Will Durant’s The Story of Civilization, right as it was time to start getting ready…It covers the earliest civilizations in Asia from Sumeria and working east to China and Japan…Mr Durant acknowledges the folly of one man, a Westerner no less, trying to accurately write about ancient Asia and while he has a point he’s being modest, too…It’s really good, tho, Durant is not the easiest of reads…This is the third book in the series I’ve read…The others, about the Reformation and Caesar and Jesus Christ, were excellent, too.

I inherited most of the set from Pa Sparrow…I thought it was a full set but no, there are some volumes missing and there are, almost interestingly, two Reformation volumes, probably because Pa Sparrow came from a long line of Lutheran ministers.

This will surprise you, but I had lunch at the fave Mexican joint while I was in the next county…Actually, it was the first place I went, because it’s right there on the right as you’re heading to the far side of town to get to the retailer…They had a new kid at the counter, but the cook knows me and caught my eye and rattled off my usual and I nodded approvingly and said si and he had a pretty good start before my order was taken…It was barely 1000 and I had the place to myself so my usual seat was open and no one had bothered to turn the TV on so it was quiet, ol’ Sparrow not obliged to listen to Mexicans yapping, tho he grew up with Ma Sparrow and her Mexican sisters yapping so at least it’s familiar.

Then I went to the retailer to get a new phone…My old iPhone is getting old – actually, it’s been old for a while, I think it’s an iPhone 2 – and is no longer supporting some apps…The Wife and I currently have Verizoid and I’m neither happy nor unhappy with them but I was in the mood to shop around and the retailer in the next county outsources their phone sales to someone and they represent a variety of carriers.

Tragically, the suh-weet $1 iPhone upgrade I got when I last got a phone a few years ago is no longer available…Verizoid wanted me to pay full price for a new iPhone…Eff that noise, as we used to say in the Navy, so she showed me some other phone brands that seemed OK but didn’t really cause me to achieve and maintain a state of arousal and she sensed this and said you know, Mr Sparrow, ATOT has some iPhone deals…The plan is a little more than you’re paying now, but the phone is only $1 a month…Hell, even a working stiff like me can afford $1 a month…I made sure it was to purchase the phone and she said of course, it was a 30-month contract and if I left early I’d have to full price for the phone but otherwise it would be mine at the end of the contract…I then asked if I could keep my number and she said yes but that turned out to be a pain in the keister and I decided to keep the new number.

I got home about noon and regular readers of this twaddle know I’m about done at noon on Thursdays but I spent a rather pleasant afternoon setting my new phone up…The big news is I was able to sync the songs I had on the old, old iPhone to the new one…I am not making that up…Maybe the Bluetooth will work and I can finally listen in the new ride…Altho I gotta be honest, I’ve been listening to a couple of radio stations and they’ve been all right…One plays a lot of new indie music and I’ve already found a few new favorites and the classical station in town has been fun to listen to, too.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1900 Wednesday until 0130 Thursday…6.5 hours for the night and 32.5 hours for the week, not a Thursday record, not particularly close, really, but still a good total…I slept really well, too, deep and woke up refreshed…I debated going back to sleep but this is the time I’m usually up on Thursday mornings so I put some coffee on and dived into the day.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
