I was looking for one specific book: Volume 1 of The Story of Civilization series…I’ve read the Reformation and the Caesar to Christ volumes and I wanted to start in at the beginning…I thought I inherited a complete set of the series from Pa Sparrow but I couldn’t find Volume 1 and investigation showed the collection actually had two editions of The Reformation volume…No, I don’t know why, either…The Sparrow’s come from hardy Lutheran stock so maybe it was important to have two volumes concerning Martin Luther around the house.
It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life.

In 2003 – Mars and Earth are at their closest point in 60,000 years, separated by a mere 34.64 million miles. The last time Mars was closer to Earth was on Sept. 24, 57,617 BC when it was 34.62 million miles away. Mars takes 686 Earth days to go around the sun and the two planets closest approach – known as perihelion – happens every couple of years when Earth passes Mars. The closest the two planets are scheduled to get in the next 500,000 years is 33.32 million miles in September 294,851.
In 1951 – Del Wilber of the Philadelphia Phillies hits three home runs as the Phillies defeat the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 in the second game of a doubleheader. For Wilber, they were fifth, sixth and seventh home runs in an eight-year career that would produce only 19 of them, meaning just under 16 percent of his career home runs were hit in this game. It remains the only time in major league history when a player drove in all his teams runs with home runs in a 3-0 win.
In 1949 – Some Enchanted Evening by Perry Como is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart, a predecessor of the Hot 100 – for its fifth and final week. The song was written by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II for their musical South Pacific and the song has charted several times, the last by Jay and the Americans in 1965.
