The Diary of a Nobody: It’s end-of-the-month at the hotel, and the VSO is busy, too.
This was about as busy a shift as I’ve had here, as end-of-the-month took forever tonight…The big problem was the very last thing I do, print out account receivable statements, took its own sweet time and I wasn’t done until 0400…I was busy while I waited for the system to prepare the statements, tho, getting morning coffee service out for the crew, the water dispenser filled and the sundry stand stocked, allowing me to take sit back with feet up for an hour, watching some Barney Miller reruns on youtube.

In 1776 – The United States of America is formed when the Second Continental Congress of the United States passes the Lee Resolution, declaring 13 British colonies “…free and independent States…absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown…” The resolution was named for Virginia Representative Richard Henry Lee, who had introduced them on June 7. Some of America’s Founding Fathers thought July 2nd would be the day America celebrated its independence, however America, of course, celebrates the 4th, the day the Declaration of Independence was signed, as her national holiday.
In 1963 – The San Francisco Giants defeat the Milwaukee Braves 1-0 in 16 innings, a game that featured a game-winning home run by Willie Mays and complete games by Juan Marichal of the Giants and Warren Spahn of the Braves. Marichal gave up eight hits, struck out ten and walked four, while Spahn gave up nine hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Marichal’s ERA went from 2.38 to 2.14, while Spahn lowered his ERA from 3.12 to 2.84.
In 1966 – Strangers in the Night by Frank Sinatra is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for its only week. The song was Sinatra’s 13th appearance at #1 on a Billboard pop chart – both solo and with Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra – and his first of two #1s on the Hot 100. The song also went to #1 in Great Britain and earned Sinatra Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Male Vocal Performance. As sometimes happens with singers and their biggest hits, Sinatra did not like the song.
