The Diary of a Nobody/May 23

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Wednesday, May 23
Had a very good workout this morning, easily the best since returning to the gym earlier this month…I was able to up the weights on both shoulders and biceps and between-set squats are now up 25…Recall they had started at ten…In fact, the only holdout in the upping weight department is the bench press, but I was strong enough so that I am going to add a few pounds next time.

The big news is I had chicken for my post-workout meal…The usual, of course, is ground beef, but I was out of that and I tried to remedy that yesterday before dinner at the bar, but the Internet is down around town and the local market was only able to accept cash, which I seldom carry…I went home to get a check, but when I checked the freezer there was a package of chicken…Pre-cooked, sliced and already seasoned…No skin, either…I scoped it out and decided it would do and it was really good…It was already cooked, so I didn’t have to worry about consuming anything raw, and I warmed it up in a frying pan with some butter and olive oil…I didn’t need all 22 ounces of it, but I did have about two-thirds of it which, combined with my protein shake, is really good nutrition.

With the Internet down I had to go to the local library to get some project work done…Their Internet is up because they use a company whose service doesn’t go out whenever there are passing clouds…After about an hour or so this guy about my age, a working man looking for a job site he has to get to, announces that he is looking for Capital Street and that he’s lived here all his life and had some zero clue where Capital Street was…The ladies at the front desk didn’t know where Capital Street was, either, and they’ve lived here forever, too.

Well, I immediately scoped it out on my laptop and it’s a bit south and east of The Shire, sort of near the new police station and the old folks home…It wasn’t too surprising none of them had heard of Capital Street before because you may – or you may not – be surprised to learn how many small-town folks don’t know street names, especially here because streets in our small town have only had names since the 1970s.

I asked the ladies at the counter if they’d heard any rumors about the old diner…They shook their heads and said no, they hadn’t heard anything, except that there’s ‘been some activity there” which anyone can see driving past it.

Then I got a phone call from a reporter at the paper…He had heard that I was in charge of veterans here in the county and I said sort of, I am district commander for the Legion, tho that includes posts in three other counties…He was doing a story on the assorted Memorial Day ceremonies going on in the county, and I gave him some pretty good quotes…The paper usually does everything it can not to get me into any story they do on the Legion, but if the reporter calls you and takes down direct quotes, there’s probably a fair chance of ol’ Sparrow getting some action in this weekend’s paper.

Lots of rain this afternoon…When I got back from the gym I walked The Shire and if it stayed sunny and warmed up a bit I might, if I were overly determined, be able to get the lawn in…While at the library tho, a really nice storm moved in, so mowing anytime in the next few days is out.

In fact, it was snowing in town…I went in for Memorial Day rehearsal, and to do some shopping, but the weather was so bad Stanko canceled it, so we will rehearse a couple of times on Monday before the ceremony…Presuming it doesn’t snow.

The Wife will be home Friday…I miss her and the cat misses her and if the cabin isn’t a museum neither is it a disaster area, either.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1900 Wednesday until 0530 Thursday…Regular readers of this crap know that 0530 is a couple of hours later than the new normal Thursday rising time, but I was beat and I didn’t really sleep that well either…After I fell asleep my nose decided to clog up, obliging me to breathe thru the mouth, so I woke up around 0230ish feeling like someone stuffed a Brillo Pad in my mouth…Since I was up, I used the can…Then it took me a while to get back to sleep, so I’m only crediting 10.0 hours for the night.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th century British novel of the same name.
