Also, he tours some of the remodeled rooms at the hotel and puts the old trash cans to the curb for one last time. new trash service begins the first of the year.

In 1991 – The Soviet Union dissolves, when their highest legislative body, the Supreme Soviet, votes both itself and the Soviet Union out of existence. The end, though formally required, was symbolic. Soviet republics had been declaring their independence for months and the previous day Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev had resigned and the Russian flag had replaced the Soviet flag atop the Kremlin. The Soviet Union had come into existence in 1922.
In 1917 – Harry Cameron of the Toronto Arenas becomes the first defenseman to score four goals in an NHL game as the Arenas – now the Maple Leafs – defeated the Montreal Canadiens 7-5. It was the first game ever between the two teams and just the sixth game in NHL history. The record for Most Goals in a Game by a Defenseman is now 5, held by Ian Turnbull, also of Toronto, who scored five goals on February 2, 1977.
In 1964 – The Beatles are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with I Feel Fine. Written by John Lennon, though credited to his collaboration with Paul McCartney, it was the sixth #1 song of the year for the Beatles, a Billboard pop chart record that still stands. The song spent five weeks at #1 in Great Britain and also went to #1 in Norway, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and Holland.
