In The News
Friends, in a transparent attempt to make subscribers out of you, it is our pleasure to announce that today marks the beginning of Read Free Week here at the site.

Now this feature and The Thought for the Day are free anyway, but the stuff we do charge for, The Diary of a Nobody, The Bottom Ten plus our books The Regular Guys and Backstairs at the Monte Carlo: A Vegas Memoir are free of charge this week.

We even have a special subscription offer for you: $29.99 for a lifetime subscription. We are not making that up! $29.99 is $20 less than a yearly subscription. Act this week though, because this offer ends Sunday.  Click here to take advantage.

Editor’s Note: Gaylon’s latest book, We The People: Making America America Again is not included in Read Free Week because it is also a fundraiser for Gaylon’s Congressional Campaign. It is included in all subscriptions, of course, as are all of Gaylon’s future books, like the forthcoming classic Criminals, Courtesans and Constables.

Today At The Site
Well, Sparrow’s tooth finally comes out on today’s edition of The Diary of a Nobody. Also, Rajib shows up on time for work, Sparrow has a really funny line at the retailer and matters are a complete mess at Hotel B.

J.R.R. Tolkien has The Thought for the Day, some drivel about casting treasures aside that really hits home today.

On This Date
In 1896 –  The shortest war in history is fought when Great Britain defeats Zanzibar in the Anglo-Zanzibar War. At 9:02am elements of the British navy began bombarding a palace on the island of Zanzibar and the battle also included a skirmish in the harbor that featured the sinking of a Zanzibari yacht. A cease-fire was declared at 9:40am, 38 minutes after the battle started.

In 1977 – Bump Wills and Toby Harrah of the Texas Rangers hit inside-the-park home runs on consecutive pitches as the Rangers defeat the New York Yankees 8-2. It remains the only time in major league history this has been accomplished.

In 1966 – The Lovin’ Spoonful is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the third and final week with Summer in the City. It was their first and only #1 song in the US, and came after their previous two singles, Daydream and Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind peaked at #2. The song also went to #1 in Canada and Finland.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question
US private sector union membership peaked in 1954, at about 34.8 percent. It is now about 7.4 percent.

Toby Harrah was also involved in one other feat that has been accomplished only once in big league history. Name it. – Answer next time!

Shameless Plugs
Backstairs at the Monte Carlo: A Vegas Memoir!: Clock in with the graveyard crew at the Monte Carlo Security Department on the glamorous Las Vegas Strip. You’ll meet drunks, reprobates and scoundrels, and those are just the officers! The funniest Vegas memoir ever! Promise!

The Regular Guys: Meet Lenny and Larry, two comedians who team up more or less out of desperation and become the biggest in show business. As funny as you would expect from Gaylon, and poignant, too.
