The Diary of a Nobody – Sun 5/20/18

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Sunday, May 20
You know, I think The Wife might be right, we are getting a different type of bird with the premium bird seed she bought, on sale, a while back…Regular readers of this crap might – or they might not – recall The Wife and I have ongoing battle vis-a-vis the merits of the $1,000-for-five-pounds birdseed vs the 20 pounds-for-a-few bucks kind.

In particular, I’ve noticed three types of birds hanging around our feeder that I can’t recall seeing before…One is mostly black, with gold and white on its back…Then there is another black bird with orange on its crest that I don’t think is an oriole but it could be, I suppose…And this morning I spotted a bird with a dark body and a green beak…Plus the usual turtle doves and sparrows and other small birds…And squirrels…Every squirrel in town seems to be stopping by The Shire and there are enough so you can see them running around in the tree…Usually, the squirrels are content to eat off the ground, but sometimes they’ll chase the bridies off.

With The Wife on the road for the retailer sole responsibility for filling the bird feeder is mine, and I’ve been filling it in the morning when I get home from work…Also, the blue tape I stuffed into the top of the feeder to keep other birds from going inside has worked, too…The concerns The Wife had about birdies getting stuck on the tape have not materialized.

I finished reading The Chinese, Portrait of a People by a Frenchman named Alain Peyrefitte recently. It came out in the early-70’s and while some like me like to decry their Communist government, China has never had self-government, it’s always been one dynasty then another over the centuries…And the Chinese do obedience better than us Americans and I’ve always felt that as long as they are well-fed the Chinese will tolerate an awful lot.

Long-time readers of this crap may – or they may not – recall a couple of library book sales I’ve gone to the past couple of years, one at the library here in our small town and other last year in the big city while I was on the way to the Legion state convention…I am still mining that haul, and will be for the next couple of years, and the latest book, from the sale in the big city last year, is a biography of Alexander Hamilton, one of the more useful and polarizing men who attended our nation’s birth, who was killed in a duel with the vice president of the United States…I’m moderately well-read on that time in our history, but this will be the first biography of Hamilton I have read…

The Wife got home from her stint at the retailer in the big city tonight and it was an ordeal getting home…I had a text from her when I woke up saying there was snow and an accident on the Interstate and everyone was detoured to smaller roads and even though it was mid-afternoon when they left the big city, it was well after dark when she got home…I had the house clean for her, too – at least as clean as I can make – to include vacuuming and putting away the dishes…It didn’t do much good because one of her first comments on walking in was that she would have to do some vacuuming tomorrow.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0830 Sunday until 1700 Sunday…I am very proud of myself…I woke up at 1530 to use the can and I was thinking that might be it for the day and even considered heading to the kitchen to get the coffee going.

But then I thought to myself, do the great athletes cave in when the going gets tough???…Did Michelangelo quit when painting the Sistine Chapel turned out to be a pain in the neck???…Of course not…So I went back to bed and rolled back over, determined to sleep even more and I nailed it, dead solid perfect, an extra 90 minutes…This is the highest Sunday sleep total since I began keeping records last month…Now, it’s a long week and we’re certainly not projecting any records for the weekly totals, but we’re off to a great start…Fingers crossed.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th century British novel of the same name.
